Lathes are incredibly dangerous. I've heard stories over the years of people getting "wadded up" in the spindle. It's human nature that once you get one hand in, you try to fish it out with the second hand.
The other thing people don't think about is the kinetic energy (in momentum) of a lathe. Those chucks weigh hundreds of pounds. Contrast that with a mill, that has a relatively small endmill or drill chuck spinning. Chucks can get loose, blow through the shop, out a wall and go flying down the street.
And no, never have long hair loose, jewelry or a tie on in the machine shop. That's another good way to get hurt real bad.
One would think it would just scalp her and then she's be cut free. Like Plunk suggested, she must've reached in with her hands to pull her hair loose.
This must've gone down like something straight out of a fucking horror movie.
