Recent research has analysed the link between the harmful effects of drugs relative to their current classification by law with some startling conclusions.

Perhaps most startling of all is that alcohol, solvents and tobacco (all unclassified drugs) are rated more dangerous than ecstasy, 4-MTA and LSD (all class A drugs). If the current ABC system is retained, alcohol would be rated a class A drug and tobacco class B.

The scientists involved, including members of the government's top advisory committee on drug classification, have produced a rigorous assessment of the social and individual harm caused by 20 of the UK's most dangerous drugs and believe this should form the basis of future ranking.

They think the current ABC system is arbitrary and not based on any scientific evidence.

The drug policies have remained unchanged over the last 40 years so should they be reformed in the light of new research?

Scientific Listing of Dangerous Drugs

20 Khat
19 Poppers - Amyl Nitrate
18 Ecstasy
17 GHB
16 Steroids
15 Methylpherdirate
14 LSD
13 4 MTA - designer replacement for X
12 Solvents
11 Cannabis
10 Buprenophrerine - replacement for heroin
9 Tobacco
8 Amphetamines
7 Benzodiazepines - valium
6 Ketamine
5 Alcohol
4 Street Methadone
3 Barbituates
2 Cocaine
1 Heroin

IS this list in an ascending order of least to most dangerous? if so its bullshit there is no way ecstacy is less dangerous than weed.

I still feel Tobacco should be number 1. It kills more people then all of them together.

That list makes no sense whatsoever. Please show me all the deaths from weed or steroids.

The original scientific research considered more than just the number of deaths when listing the drugs.

It also considered addictiveness, general harm to the body, cost to society and I forget if there was anything else.

I am not sure what you lads are moaning about, a lot of drugs that were previously considered 'really BAD' have been proven by science to be incorrectly classified and not as dangerous as most people have thought.

I think that in the UK, alcohol kills more people and costs more to the national health service.

AAS is good for us. So just take it off the list :)

When I saw the list, that was the first thing that jumped out and grabbed my attention. Half the time with extasy it is like potluck; you're never sure of what is in it and what ratios.

Cannabis bigger cancer risk than cigarettes: study
Tue Jan 29, 4:44 AM ET

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080129/hl_nm/cancer_cannabis_dc;_ylt=AnbAMWGlY5B0GDpovigdPeis0NUE

Smoking a joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer risk, scientists in New Zealand have found, as they warned of an "epidemic" of lung cancers linked to cannabis.
Studies in the past have demonstrated that cannabis can cause cancer, but few have established a strong link between cannabis use and the actual incidence of lung cancer.
In an article published in the European Respiratory Journal, the scientists said cannabis could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco as its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes.
The method of smoking also increases the risk, since joints are typically smoked without a proper filter and almost to the very tip, which increases the amount of smoke inhaled. The cannabis smoker inhales more deeply and for longer, facilitating the deposition of carcinogens in the airways.
"Cannabis smokers end up with five times more carbon monoxide in their bloodstream (than tobacco smokers)," team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, said in a telephone interview.
"There are higher concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke ... what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on cannabis when there is so much done on tobacco."
The researchers interviewed 79 lung cancer patients and sought to identify the main risk factors for the disease, such as smoking, family history and occupation. The patients were questioned about alcohol and cannabis consumption.
In this high-exposure group, lung cancer risk rose by 5.7 times for patients who smoked more than a joint a day for 10 years, or two joints a day for 5 years, after adjusting for other variables, including cigarette smoking.
"While our study covers a relatively small group, it shows clearly that long-term cannabis smoking increases lung cancer risk," wrote Beaseley.
"Cannabis use could already be responsible for one in 20 lung cancers diagnosed in New Zealand," he added.
"In the near future we may see an 'epidemic' of lung cancers connected with this new carcinogen. And the future risk probably applies to many other countries, where increasing use of cannabis among young adults and adolescents is becoming a major public health problem."

I drank so everything would be light - but it was dark.
I drank to feel good - but later I felt even worse.
I drank with my friends - and created enemies.

Where did you get that from? Ecstasy is MDMA not heroin.

You lads are bonkers sometimes. Arguing the fine points of a place or two instead of taking THE GOLD of this scientific research.

The original paper was published in The Lancet, which is one of the foremost and respected scientific journal in the world.

Seriously, guys, if you want to prove a point with steroids, you have to start using ACTUAL FACTS and RESEARCH, not just your opinion, or something that you have heard.

Could we get some real long term studies don on people using aas the right way, and the oooo sooo bad things that happen to them.

O ya thats right no studies have ever been don and if they were they could not prove aas caused any life threating problems ever.

estasy pills in nyc are mixed with many things . including heroin ... pretty sure its like this all over .. atleast in the usa

Heroin and cocaine have never been found in ecstasy in laboratory tests, even though press reports say otherwise. Speed and ketamine have been found on occasions. Ketamine's groggy, dissociative effects are often likened by users to a heroin feeling, perpetuating the rumour.

How many people die from using ecstasy? Isn't it very risky?
The UK figures suggest seven ecstasy-related deaths per million users. This compares to 625 alcohol-related deaths per million drinkers. In fact, more people in the UK die from choking on peanuts than from taking ecstasy.

Is ecstasy addictive?
Physically no, the body will not crave more, or become dependent with repeated use. There is a psychological danger, however, that users can start to like it too much and crave the emotional contentment that it provides. Craving the next party, mood swings and inability to concentrate on mundane tasks are common signs.

How long does ecstasy remain in the body?
Less than 1% remains after 48 hours. This amount will not be detectable in blood or urine samples. However, Ecstasy users may test positive for amphetamines in the standard drug test.

What causes ecstasy deaths?
Complications from over-heating, often alongside heavy alcohol consumption, is the most common cause of death. However, drinking too much water in an attempt to stay 'safe' is more dangerous. Some, often inexperienced, users have died after drinking as much water as they physically could. In one reported case, a user died after drinking 26 pints of water in a short space of time. The excess water causes the brain to swell inside the skull, which puts pressure on the brain stem and leads to coma and death.

Deaths involving contaminants are rare but do happen, as do deaths involving drugs cocktails (ecstasy and DXM, and ecstasy, cocaine and viagra are the current dangerous mixes).

who knows what they mix in there .. i have heard from many heroin..people who mess with drugs far to much .. i do know i was in the nyc club the tunnel like 5 years ago when a kid died of od'in on estasy .. shyt is no joke ..deff worse then riods

How anyone can say ectasy is not addictive is likely smoking crack themselves, why isn't crack on that list by the by. anyhow ecstacy is often mixed with a bunch of shit, usually a bunch of coke, speed, heroin fuck sometimes rat poison and shit. YOU CAN NOT DROP DEAD INSTANTLY JUST FROM HAVING A CIGARETTE OR SMOKING A DUBE! but you can drop dead immediately just because you have ex in your system.

ya ya, sure a bunch more people die from alcohol and cigarettes, but a fucking TON more people use alcohol and cigarettes. did they take that into consideration? probably not.

MDMA is ****NOT**** ecstacy as it is sold on the streets, it's pure ecstacy, but that isn't often what people are putting in thier mouth.

why isn't shit like PCP, LSD on that list, like fuck, people in the UK are kind of screwy in my opinion just based on that list.

BINGO, there are so many urban myths.

For example, with LSD, there have only ever been 2 recorded deaths from people jumping off buildings.

Psychiatrists know it would be a useful drug in a clinical setting, but due to the opinion that LSD is SO DANGEROUS, they are unable to do any clinical trials into the benefits of the drug.

Knowledge is power lads, and it has to be based on actual cold hard facts, not rumours, heresay, anedotal evidence.

Let's look at this logically.

Heroin has to be imported. It is more expensive than X.

X can be made in labs in the US.

WHY would anyone cut X with heroin?

People die from dehydration on X, not from the X itself.

There are not that many recorded cases of death considering how many people take it each weekend.

which labs out there were testing what EX for these substances, because we know people who test the quality of the cut of what is in this shit and have found these substances in them. you are up all fucking night on like a tab of blue dolphin, but if you take PURE mdma you can go to sleep 15 minutes after using it. I'm not an avid user of Ex or anything, but I have seen it destroy people's lives.

perhaps North America is just a bit different then the UK though, who knows.

LSD is on the list. Crack is considered to be in with coccaine.

Read some of the earlier posts, the ratings are not just based on deaths per year.

Your post demonstrates exactly what the scientists are claiming, that the classification of drugs is not based on any scientific basis, but emotively charged opinions and societal 'tabboos'.

I have seen post after post after post by you lads being angry because the media is making such a big deal about how dangerous steroids are, and you will always bring up how dangerous tobacco and alcohol are.

Here is the evidence.

Get the GOLD in this research.

The UK has fantastic science BTW, and a very long history of it, which is not suppressed by governmental organisations or big business.

Yes they did.

Why you would not think that scientists would not think of something as basic as that?

If you are interested, I would highly recommend that you read more of the related articles on-line and the original paper.

This research took several years to compile.

Overdose

Taking too much Ecstasy can result in:

· Extremely high body temperatures
· High blood pressure
· Hallucinations
· Fast Heartbeat
· Breathings problems
· Death

Death often results from harmful overheating (hyperthermia), or from drinking too much at one time (hyponatremia). Hyponatremia is a condition where excess fluid intake swells the brain resulting in coma. A third cause of death is stimulation. Over stimulation of the nervous system can result in heart attack or brain hemorrhage.

Warning Signs of Overdose

· Feeling hot or unwell
· Becoming confused, not able to talk properly
· Headache
· Vomiting
· Not Sweating
· Racing heart or pulse when resting
· Fainting or collapsing
· Loss of control over body movements
· Tremors
· Problems Urinating

another article i found .. sure dont seem safer then gear to me lmfao

What are some of the consequences of using Ecstasy?

An Ecstasy overdose is characterized by a rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, faintness, muscle cramping, panic attacks, and, in more severe cases, loss of consciousness or seizures. One of the side effects of the drug is jaw muscle tension and teeth grinding. As a consequence, Ecstasy users will often suck on pacifiers to help relieve the tension.

Ecstasy may cause hyperthermia, muscle breakdown, seizures, stroke, kidney and cardiovascular system failure, possible permanent damage to sections of brain critical to thought and memory, and death.

Check out this site.... good info on this site but the key is the bottom wich I included for you to read in this post

http://thedea.org/statistics.html

The 'ecstasy related' drug deaths number is based on an assumption of about 60 deaths (in all probability there were only a handfull of purely 'ecstasy' deaths) out of a user population of about 3 million (based on the 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse Statistics, conducted by SAMHSA.)

Fact is compared with other popular drugs, ecstasy has a relatively low mortality rate.

The current UK rate is 7 deaths per million users per year. More people die fishing or eating supper.
The US figures are much lower, only one death per million users.

i don't get why peopel think that. MDMA is much cheaper than heroin. no pills have ever been tested positive with heroin. why cut a drug with a much more expensive compound?

That is pretty deep right there bro.

smoking kills more people then any of the other drugs
slow long death usually over 20 - 40 years

but still not the amount of people smoking itself
also other people die from the second hand smoke
many times babies get ill and die ,the doctors often link it to a young baby being in a smokers household through blood test on the dead child

that list is garbage

Going by "the most physically/mentally hard on your body/brain on a one time try" extacy is by far the most dangerous, going from many experiences with every drug possible and long binging weekends high as fuck, popping one too many beans can end your life instantly. I've taken several friends of mine to the ER after a long night of rolling. So many things can go wrong easily when you're rolling. For example, you can't be going in and out of places with different temperatures because your brain has a hard time balancing out your body core temperature when you're on X. Leading to dehydration, overheating, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, seizures, etc

but going by overall deaths per year, alcohol and tobacco easily take the cake

lol my ass bro, you seriously think steroids have no long term side effects on your heart, cholestrolol and takes tole on other organs your body? You think people havn't shortened their lives because of malfunctioned organs due to steroid use? Give me a break, it's not coincidental that over 50 pro wrestlers have died under the age of 50 since 1985. Yes, not abusing A.A.S. will lessin your chances of problems in the future but smoking cigarettes doesn't kill you after 1 pack either, long term use will catch up to you in your later years

Just because you can't really OD on test enathate, doesn't mean it doesn't cause any deaths

yes this is a steroid discussion board and yes there are alot of supporters, but be realistic, steroid use absolutely has an effect on depleting your life if you abuse/misuse it
