2 questions about protein.

1) I'm wondering, are protein powders and bars really necessary? I've heard that more is not necessarily better, since you just pee out unused protein anyway.
After a workout I usually have a sandwich with about 30g of various kinds of deli meat on it, and I'll often also have a can of sardines or something like that, too. Is that enough? I don't tend to like drinking supplements, and they are very expensive.

2) Also, I've heard that you have about an hour after a workout to get some protein into your muscles while they're really receptive to it. So, if I'm in the gym for 2 hours, and run for the first half hour, do chest and core for the second half hour, shoulders and core for the third, then to the showers, it's more than an hour since I've done chest. So, does that mean that by that time it won't get full benefit of the protein?

I think the right kind of Protein drink is definitely important. I'm not talkin about them sugary ass milkshakes that u get from GNC, but legit protein shakes. I take one that's superlow in sugar has great protein and a laundry list of amino acids that are so key in muscle replenishing. People tend to drink too many shakes in a day just so that can reach there calorie numbers for the day which isn't right. I take two protein drinks a day, one an hour before I lift and then one right after I'm done. Which is more then enough. If ur not gonna drink them I would make sure u have a nice little breakfast before u work out and then after u work out. U can even buy liquid egg whites in a carton that u can mix in any kind of drink. And I know they say drink right after u work out, so just when u get home from the gym. is fine.

Wheytobuildmuscle is a good ass protein drink.

Protein powders are necessary if you need them to get in enough protein and calories. They are a supplement. Whey is also very fast absorbing. If you drink some after a workout, you will quickly fuel your muscles with the nutrients they need to grow. I think that if you are serious, you will properly supplement where needed.

both the above posts are right on the money... i couldn't agree more... why don't you drink your protein drink before you get in the shower? then you don't have to worry about not getting a nice full effect... They definitely have their role in their effectiveness...

Alright, thanks folks. Also, I've heard that mixing protein powder with water is not the way to go since water doesn't have the necessary fats and carbs to properly metabolize the protein, so much of it goes to waste. In this regard, milk is best, even without the added protein of milk. Can you confirm this theory?

Well, PROTEIN is necessary. Powders are just a way of getting extra without the calories. Of course, if you eat 300 grams of tuna and chicken breasts every day you wouldn't need it. Then again, GEAR does what no other protein source can do -- food or supplemental. it's in a league of its own.

totally agree with nelson... im a firm believer in getting protein from multiple sources in a day... and to get ENOUGH, you need MULTIPLE sources and obviously food is the best source, but the powder definitely serves a great purpose... i like the amino post above too... a GOOD QUALITY powder has a ton of great amino's in it...

i dont know where you got the mixing theory from but that is definitely not correct at all... i feel like half the people that use milk do it simply for the taste... it is totally fine to mix with water... most all of the pre made shakes you buy in a can are not made with milk either... that theory is not accurate at all bro...

Deifnitely feel they are necessary if you are concerned with muscle growth. However as stated above nothing can replace good ol fashioned food. And bro just so you know most deli meats are crap and don't do shit for you. Get you some organic lean meats. Turkey, Chicken, White fish. Then you are fueling your body.

Hmm... tell me more about deli meats and organic meats? :worried: :faint:

second that... i won't even touch deli meats... everything that nelson said is true and not to mention the crazy amounts of sodium they are loaded with... its just nasty how they are made... i definitely do not recommend them at all...

About the whole "you have a 45min-1hr window to get your protein in after a workout," that's a common misunderstanding... it refers to a metabolic window, not a digestive window. With this in mind, I think eating enough quality protein in your pre-workout meal (or preworkout shake) is more important than racing to the locker room to chug protein after lifting. It takes awhile for your body to process the protein/carbs you eat, so your preworkout meal/shake will be falling into this metabolic window, not your post workout shake. So don't freak if you can't have ur pwo shake or meal in the locker room, just get home and eat a good meal as soon as you reasonably can.

Protein shakes are supposed to supplement your diet, meaning most of your protein should still come from solid foods.

i see... so my main sources of energy through the school day are sandwiches with deli meat, fruits, usually portable fruits like apples and bananas, and granola bars (ive made my own because the store bought ones have a lot of crap in them, but sometimes they're just more convenient).

So what's a good thing to pump up a sandwich with if deli meats are crap?
