2 deadlift questions

For those who use wrist straps- at what weight did you start using them? What made you start using them? (meaning was it just getting difficult to hold the bar, or did you drop it...?). As I add weight, I'm being less sure of my grip. Second Q. Does anyone feel like they are going to zonk after the lift itself? The weight I use now is a fraction of what some people on here use. It really doesn't feel too bad while I'm doing it, but today after I set the bar down my heart was pounding like crazy! I think I could've used some extra water, but seemed more than just that. Anyone else ever have that prob?

Deads are tough. If you are pushing yourself on them you will feel very tired after. I never do more than 5 reps at a time and i'm completely out of breath after.

As for straps. I'd never use them myself. Try to do more grip work to improve your grip. Farmers Walks and static holds are great. Maybe stick them in on a seperate day from deads

I use them when I get to 405. I use them so grip doesnt interfere with my deadlifts. I want to be able to go to complete failure. Ive used chalk also. Both work real well.

When I first started DL'ing, I had a girlie grip so I started to use straps. Not long after, I was "encouraged" to lose the straps, do some grip work and get a rosin bag. That along with an alternating mixed grip has helped me to say good bye to the straps. They've been in my gym bag for months and months now!

We could start a big hairy debate over straps or no straps, but it comes down to your individual goals. For me, I want to have functional strength, which not using straps has helped me with.

BTW, I too agree that DL's are tough -- if you're NOT exhausted, then you didn't push yourself enough!

Happy DL'ing! ;)

so what fails first?

i can see missing a lift, but if you are repping to failure, what part of you fails first? at what point does your form break down and you compensate to complete the movement? at what point do you realize that "failure" is your body's last option before injury. (especially with a compound movement, too many links in the chain to be broken)

lift hard AND smart.

I don't believe in straps. My setup for the deadlift isn't NEARLY as good when I have straps on.

IMO it is also important to develop strong grip in addition to the rest of the body.

Ditch the straps :)

For me it's definitely my grip. Even at lower weights/higher reps I really feel my grip slipping. If I can only get 15 reps chances are I couldn't hold the bar any longer but the rest of me could have done another 3-5 reps. A mixed grip helps alot and I fould that gloves help some too.
