lol i get that a lot. im 6 foot 225 obviously im not huge but way bigger then the average guy. when people see me in pics they say i look like im like 190 or something until they see me in person. im just well proportioned like you said i guess. but then when im in pics next to someone it shows...
the way he described the machine sounds like one of those leg press machines that u push and the seat goes back instead of a sled. ive been able to max out those machines since i was in like 8th grade lol. like that bloke said free weights are all that matters. ive maxed out the 2 level hammer...
i do them a lot. a powerlifter i used to workout with did these a lot. he could do a set of 10 with 315 with pausing and breathing out at the bottom lol. he would do these with 405 and made it look like he was warming up with plates.
having worked in the gym industry i can tell you its all up to the person. if someone is dedicated and working out for them is a must they always make it in. ive signed up single moms with like 5 kids lol. the ones that are fit always seem to be the most successfull also.
i supposed it depends on the person. i can squat and dead pretty heavy for my age and size and i havent used a belt or anything since highschool. I pulled 515 on thursday with just chalk. felt good.

i got choked out in a fight one time after i beat the shit out of a kid. he caught me in like a front side choke. when he let go it got broken up so i never got hit or anything. i messed him up pretty bad but i guess thats considered a loss? i came out on top in my mind lol.
