There are very few people that actually realize that the word discipline comes from the word disciple.
Fewer still that understand that disciplining is about guiding and teaching; giving information, support, comfort, positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement when appropriate.
Or worse still there is a segment of the population that pretty much *puts up with their kids* or just does whatever THEY WANT with that kid until that kid either runs away or they through them out. Those are the ones that society REALLY foots the bill for.

That shit's rampant here because mormons crank their kids out so fast when parents are so young. The guy gets back from his mission at 21 years old, marries his sweetheart immediately, and within a year they're expecting. It's not uncommon to see a 25 year old couple with 3 screaming kids here running around the store completely undisciplined. Noone says anything. Fuuuck, growing up in Philly if people saw your kids carrying on like that they'd tell you to whoop their asses or make you feel like they'd whoop yours first.

I think our society has gotten soft on raising kids......no follow through on punishments, spoiling their kids...etc

A lot of times it is the parents, but also a lot of times the parent are scared to use the normal punishments because they could get reported for child abuse. Now a days the kid can call the cops and have the parents put in jail, go figure....
Child protective services aint worth a shit, when there is proof of child abuse they leave the child in the home until the parents kill him. But if I spank my child to punish him, and "get caught" then they will take my child and put him in foster care.....go figure....
I think the city, state and fed should just stay out of it completely...

wow what the FUCK???? i wrote a whole paragraph and it only says "discipline" did a mod edited it or something???
i have a 3 year old nephew who's out of control lately. he was an absolute angel from birth up until a month ago (he's turning 4 in january) but he won't listen to anything me/my parents/my sis say. everything is a game to him. he bites,pinches,kicks, screams at almost everyone except strangers. The other day i finally lost it and smacked his bare ass pretty hard. he didn't cry at all just had this distant look in his eyes like a piece of him died inside (hard to explain) maybe i'm just a softy but wtf do you do??? its like his attention span is 3 seconds and once you scold him for doing something bad he'll do something else equally worse... i wasn't abused as a child. but, growing up if i got out of line my parents weren't afraid to use a belt or back hand me. i can honestly say it worked but, a few of those times i've always carried resentment... maybe i don't want him to have that???? what do you parents do???
forgot to mention he goes to pre school and has NEVER gotten out of line there with the teachers or the kids in his class. guess after a long day of finger painting he unwinds by beating everyone when he gets home?
also is it true about the "terrible two's" that if a child doesn't go through them by that age he'll lash out for a while at a older age? between ages 3-5 anyways?

I will never raise a hand to my child. My parents never laid a hand on me, my brother or my sister and yet they manged to have three perfectly well behaved children. My brother and sister have children that they have never spanked or "given the belt" and they are also wonderfully sweet, well behaved children.
I don't begrudge another parent their way of dealing with things, but it is perfectly possible to raise a child who minds you and respects you without punishing them physically and the lack of parents resorting to that is NOT the reason kids are wild and out of control.

sometimes mine lose it and melt down right after school. I hear its normal because they have been angels all day.

Not always. I have a demon child next door. He was born an asshole. He has two brothers and they are fine so what happened to him??? He got to go off to some military school this fall but returned for Christmas and you guessed it, little f'er started an insurrection Christmas day. His usually trade marks were there, violence and chaos. The pack of thugs with him leading ended up being disbanded all sent to their own homes for the rest of the day. Little F'er is off to visit relatives and I hope he doesn't come back.
The kid is straight up evil. He managed to get thrown off a football team for being to violent???? Not such an easy thing to do.
Maybe the melt down is from seperation from the parents? I dunno just a thought but likely the child misses there parents all day at school then they get home what happends? Are they getting attention right away or are the parents off taking care of making dinner etc?

good question. we learned that one too.
for example on Thursday nights my wife gets home around 8pm.
my girls are hyper when she comes in and want her attention.
if she goes straight to the shower its not good. if she gives them 15 mins it makes a big difference. she doesnt even have to say anything cause they do all the talking.

it goes non stop for 15 or 20 then everything is cool LOL she can now take a bath, and eat some food and I can put the girls to bed.
kids just want their parents attention.
