N.C. lawmakers push bill for state religion

Republican lawmakers in North Carolina have introduced a bill declaring that the state has the power to establish an official religion — a direct challenge to the First Amendment.

One professor of politics called the measure “the verge of being neo-secessionist,” and another said it was reminiscent of how Southern states objected to the Supreme Court’s 1954 integration of public schools.
The bill says that federal courts do not have the power to decide what is constitutional, and says the state does not recognize federal court rulings that prohibit North Carolina and its schools from favoring a religion.

The bill was introduced Monday by two Republican representatives from Rowan County, north of Charlotte, and sponsored by seven other Republicans. The party controls both chambers of the North Carolina Legislature.

It's no worse than saying kids can't celebrate easter or christmas in school. The state having a religion doesn't make the citizens religious.

NOT celebrating a Holiday has nothing to do with religion it is just treating a day like any other day.

The State having a religion does not make people religious, but what does it do? Jack asks a good question.

what would be the point of declaring a state religion anyway?

Good question. Other than to send a message to let people know who is, and who isn't, included.

When I lived in AZ the debate was over making English the official language. Why? The excuse was that it would save paper by not having to print government documents in 2 languages. Obviously, it went deeper than that.

The amazing thing to me is that it is absolutely against the Constitution, expicitely, not by interpretation. And it is proposed by legislators who are sworn to uphold the constitution. Sounds like grounds for impeachment.
