A thread about really good movies.

Citizen Kane, Godfather, Casablanca, Raging Bull, 'Apocalypse Now....

List and discuss.

Psycho is still the best thriller/horror movie with Rear Window at a close second.

Schindler's List is by far the best Holocaust movie.

The best 'American' movies are: American Beauty, Forrest Gump, Crash and Citizen Kane.

The Shawshank Redemption (maybe the best movie of the 90s) has got to be near the top of the list.
And Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is a film I can watch anytime - I need to be in the right mood to watch some other 'great' films

Schindler's List is the best movie of the 90's to me.

here's a few:

Best action movies - Gladiator, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Best Sci-Fi - Aliens, Star Wars
Best military movie - We Were Soldiers
Best randomly unique genre - Pulp Fiction

Ohhh quite a few good movies as well......................."Its all gone Pete Tong" is a very good movie about a British DJ that went deaf, "Waiting" is a good movie as it portrays food service people in mainstream restaurants to a T.
"No Man's Land" - Best foreing movie, portrays how people that were friends once could be enemies, how hartred was spilled by one man.
"Snatch" was pretty good too, it pioneered multi-plot movies.....etc

A few of my favorites:

Boondock Saints
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Johnny Depp is the fuckin man)
Snatch
Van Wilder

Once Upon A Time In The West
If you have a surround sound theatre system to view this on then it is one of the best movies of all time to watch and listen to as there is very little dialogue throughout the entire movie. The opening 15 minutes is made up of a creaking wind-mill, dripping water, cracking knuckles, a clicking telegraph machine, a pestering fly, a distant train and the following few words of dialogue.

'Hey - hey hey hey hey, if you want any tickets, you'll have to go around to, eh, to, eh, the front of the, eh... oooh, well, I s'pose it'll be all right.'

It is definitely one to watch from beginning to end to follow and understand the story. Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, and Jason Robards star.

Life Is Beautiful
An Italian war movie with English sub-titles. You really don't notice the sub-titles as you get right into the story. Again, this is one of those movies you have to watch from beginning to end to follow the story. I wont give away the ending but it is very well made. It is nothing like you would expect from a typical war movie as there are some very funny moments throughout the movie, even in settings where you would not expect humour. Winner of 3 Academy Awards. Roberto Benigni stars.

well , lil old me and my favorite films.....

12 monkeys - gilliam is a master !! a master !!!!

deer hunter - bleak bleak bleak, yet awsome !!

time bandits - say no more except GIVE IT BACK WALLY !!!

Once upon a time in america - epic epic epic , both brutal and endearing

dirty rotten scoundrels - i can laff n laff !! they were dancing !!!!

so many more,films rock :Chef:

Great Thread guys

Good to see Leone polling well.

my idea of heaven is Sergio's cannon on a big f*ck off widescreen telly and surround soundsystem blasting Moriconne at 110 dcbls.

My favourites tend to rotate according to mood etc but top of the pile tends to be

Once Upon a Time in the West/America
Good the Bad and the Ugly
Fistful of Dynamite
Wild Bunch
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid
Yojimbo
Alien/s
Blade Runner
Third man
Trainspotting (becaue "its shite being Scottish" and we are not afraid to admit it)
Donnie Darko (not director's cut)
Deadman (Johnny Depp, Bob Mitchum, Gabriel Byrne, Iggy Pop as transvetsite beau peep, Billybob Thornton, Julian Glover, Lance Henrickson, (the wonderful)john Hurt, a stonking Neil Young soundtrack, glorious black and white + enough existencial nightmares to keep you awake forever...what more do you want from a movie!)
Walkabout/Performance/Dont Look Now
Toy Story 1+2

I've gotta go with Kevin Smith's New Jersey Chronicles - Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and soon to be joined by Clerks II.

Chopper
Pulp Fiction
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
Sin City
Fight club

there's afew really good films i just cant think of most

heh, Scarface is overrated. Pacino did way better in Scent of a Woman. Anyways here's my list.
comedies - Blazing Saddles, The Producers (original), Animal House
dramas - Citizen Kane, American History X, The Deer Hunter, Rushmore, SLC punk, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, 12 Angry Men
horror - Vertigo (James stewart was nothing short of amazing. Especially compared to the horrible horror flicks out nowadays. I'll never forget the first time i watched this film. The suspense almost made me cry at the end.)
Many people would put some more Zemekis/Spielberg/and Hanks films on there top lists. I feel that Hanks is overrated nowadays. Spielberg turned war of the worlds from a classic into a horrible remake. Few realize that Vanillia Sky was a remake of a foreign film titled "Open your eyes". If you get a chance, check that out. The foreign actors make Cruise and the american cast look like newb actors.
Few people realize the comedic genius of Mel Brooks. Blazing Saddles has the highest laugh per minute (lpm) ratio of any movie ever made.
This is my top list.

Gladiator
Pulp Fiction
Scarface
Goodfellas
Boogie Nights
American Psycho
Saving Private Ryan
True Romance
Hostle
Once Were Warriors
The Thing
Fast Times At Ridgemont High

I think that Rest Stop has to be one of the best horror movies out, the gore in this movie is just so realistic and the overall quality of the movie is very good. (Especially for a direct to DVD movie) John Shiban, the director, is a genius, just look at the work he did for X-Files and Supernatrual. This is a great movie, and if you haven't heard about it you can check out rawfeed.com

The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner and directed by Cecil Demille is for me one of the greatest movies ever made.

Considering the fact that it was shot for years plus the limitations in making special effects those times, still the movie manage to pull it through (especially in the scene wherein Moses parted the water---it looks realistic).

:qt:

Some of my favorites:

Goodfellas
Godfather I & II
Boogie nights
Mulholland Drive
Star wars IV and V
Raiders of the lost ark
Back to the Future
Downfall (most have never heard about it, worth looking into)
Aliens
City of God
Summer of Sam
Team America
Top Secret

My favourite for the action is District 13. But just about all of Luc Besson's action films are excellent.
