The Compass of Pleasure: How Our Brains Make Fatty Foods, Orgasm, Exercise, Marijuana, Generosity, Vodka, Learning, and Gambling Feel So Good

These things all excite our more base urges. Before, these assets were scarce so we indulged when we got them. Now, they are plentiful and we still act like they are scarce.

Consider this, anal was a guilty pleasure before and now there are guys like you who dish-out teh o-ring like it grew on trees.

Thx 4 Mo'ing up my neurobiology/Evo-Devo thread

True. It's the same situation with salt, sweet, and fatty foods.

however, the gene responsible to produce enzymes to break down lactose mutated to allow for us to consume protein correlated with the micro-evolutionary response to agriculture development, e.g. dairy farming

Hence, most of us (humans) are lactase persistence, not lactose intolerant.

Generosity and learning???

Generosity and learning???

Generosity actually has a selfish component "wired" through evolution. The concept of "reciprocity" is a part of evolution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reciprocity_(social_psychology)

Neuropsychology suggests:

  • the brain responds to "Oxytocin", a hormone best known for activity during birth and lactation, which is also a brain neurotransmitter involved in social recognition and bonding.
  • "This result confirms our earlier work showing that oxytocin affects trust, but with a dramatically larger effect for generosity."

Psychology and wellbeing - A Dose of Oxytocin Hormone Increases Generosity

"Learning can cause dopamine responses to transfer from primary rewards (such as tuna fish to your cat) to reward-predicting stimuli (such as the sound of the can opener). This suggests that reward...may play a central role in how and why we are able to learn."

So what specific neural pathway links your o-ring being violated to a reinforcement mechanism?

(an on a serious note, grats on looking up the real science regarding generosity on learning. My background is in neuroscience and I'm somewhat familiar with the area. With study, it becomes pretty apparent that a cum-by-ya bongo playing libtard isn't that much different than a coke head. That's why pragmatism always trumps good intentions.)

most everyone has a narcotic
maybe 5% don't
in my family I can include my mother
well, religion
most people you can figure out their narcotic PDQ

on another note
is it prerequisite for an Alpha male to have a good sized soldier?

After gaining the foundations of evolutionary development and our brains (some real heathen material, e.g. Pinker, Dawkins, etc ...), and some basic concepts of cognitive neuroscience I want to concentrate on learning about Neuroscience/Cognitive Pscyh connection, particularly as advances are made through imaging.

APS Observer - Thinking It Over

“With fMRI we can dynamically set up experiments and perturb them, and watch how the brain changes as function of what you are controlling experimentally."

btw, I've been interested in pursing this for some time, so don't interpret it as, "PICK3's exploring my area of expertise = hero worship, or some Mo expression of flattery by imitation".

I barely missed the fMRI revolution. We used to make tungsten-in-glass electrodes by hand and do multisite recordings with piezoelectric steppers. You could spend hours moving through the cortex looking for a few decent recording sites.

Damn whippersnappers have it easy these days.

Want to know what else I want an fMRI image of?

Generosity and learning???

What, you don't orgasm when you give the bum on the street five bucks or experience extreme inebriation when studying physics?

Dude, the physics club meetings at college were basically a drunken, stoned orgy with a roulette wheel and some equations spattered on the floor with bodily fluids. The whole "nerd" persona is just to keep others unaware of our super-secret cult.

Some of my fonder college memories were on the top floor of the Vanderbilt physics building listening to a particle physics guy as we drank waaaaay too much checkoslovakian beer.

Then the rest of the fun was all about wimminz.
