I've gotten totally hooked on a new form of Reality TV.
The shows are called "Changing Rooms", "Trading Spaces", "While you were out" and "House Invaders".
They show on various channels, though I most often come upon them on TLC, HGTV, and BBC America.
I watch these shows with all the fascination of a train wreck, so awfull you just can't pull yourself away.
The shows all follow one of two formats.
1. Two neighbor couples trade houses. You get to decorate any one room in their house and they get to "decorate" one room in your house, any way they want on a budget of about $1000. You get no say in how your house will come out. (Sounds like Anal AssPlorer and his contractor).
2. The wife sends her hubby off for a weekend vacation, and a crew arrives to renovate the house over the weekend before he gets back. Weekend's up, "Are You Surprised?" "yup". "Don't you just love it?" "Uh, what's that, did you make a waterfall out of my bowling trophies?"
All the shows follow a common theme....
the contestants work with a (I use the word loosely) "decorator" in charge of the rooms makeover.
The decorator chooses lovely purple's and mauves to contrast with accents of Orange, Black and Silver....then the contenstants are off painting their friends room with abandon. They smash thru walls, jackhammer old stone fireplaces and rip up perfectly usable carpet. Paint the floor pink, make paper machet elephants to support a plank door coffee table, and cut the legs off Aunt Harriets antique dresser before painting it black laquer.
The result usually makes even the most tastless trailer dweller recoil, though on occasion they have made a room I thought was pretty cool.
Then all the contestants go back o see what their friends have been doing over at their house:
"Ohhh! God! It's.....lovely...I would never have thought of that!....I was wondering what to do with that old tire...Who would have thought...Lime Green....with Burlap curtains!"
