Reagan was an extremely smart and extremely cunning person, but he created this aura around him of an "aw shucks" attitude to the point where 40% of the country thought he was a bumbling idiot. Java was half right when he said "it's about creating a message so powerful your political opponents can't disagree with you." It's also about the way in which you deliver that message.
