Skeletal muscle RAS and exercise performance

Alun Jones and David R. Woods

ABSTRACT

A local renin–angiotensin system (RAS) may be suggested by evidence of gene expression of RAS components within the tissue as well as physiological responsiveness of this gene expression. This review will focus on the evidence supporting the existence of the constituent elements of a physiologically functional paracrine muscle RAS. The effect of local skeletal muscle RAS on human exercise performance will be explored via its relation with pharmacological intervention and genetic studies.

The most likely configuration of the muscle RAS is a combination of in situ synthesis and uptake from the circulation of RAS components. A reduction in angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity reverses the decline in physical performance due to peripheral muscle factors in those with congestive heart failure and may halt or slow decline in muscle strength in elderly women. Genetic studies suggest that increased ACE and angiotensin II (Ang II) mediate greater strength gains perhaps via muscle hypertrophy whereas lower ACE levels and reduced bradykinin (BK) degradation mediate enhanced endurance performance perhaps via changes in substrate availability, muscle fibre type and efficiency.

Whoa... Can you take this one a few notches down? What's an RAS and what's its significance in the larger physiological scheme of things?

Thanks :)

alwayson, a research scientist? Ok, I'll drop you a hint on a variable you have not looked at yet in this. Dbol is 17-aa. One effect of this, is that once it inters the bloodstream it has a much longer half life than testosterone, or another steroid that does not have this side group attached. While it is a substrait for the aromatase enzyme at only 42% the rate that testosterone is (and is in fact a much weaker androgen in terms of binding affinity for the AR... unless one considers the extremely long half life in the blood stream which greatly increases the odds of it successfully binding to an AR).. the estradoil created still maintains this side group, and the characteristic long half life. In laymans terms, the estragen created by the aromataze enzyme acting on dbol stays in the blood stream alot longer than regular estragen leading to a more estragenic effect. You are welcome.

dbol is clearly better for water retention. I am just asking how CLOSE testE is to dbol in terms of personal experience from members on the board.

finasteride is also key to my thinking though...It changes the anabolic:androgenic ratio to 4:1, more bloat....good stuff
