Foot-And-Mouth Scare Leads to Canadian Drug Bust

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Efforts to prevent foot-and-mouth disease spreading to Canada have produced an unexpected benefit -- the arrest of a drug smuggler.


A man was arrested at Vancouver airport late on Monday carrying 10,543 steroid vials and pills in his hand luggage. He was traveling from Greece via a flight from London.


Police said he was discovered during a special inspection aimed at preventing air travelers from spreading the livestock disease.


Canada this week began special inspections of air passengers arriving from Europe. Passengers' luggage is X-rayed and hand-checked for food products, and they must walk on a disinfectant-laced carpet.
