I will start and admit that I'm a poacher. Have been since i could pull back a bow string.
I hunt my own land that I pay taxes on, year round and @ night.
Deer and turkey are mostly what I drop. Mind you, my land is in the middle of nowhere, and there is so much deer, that I can't take a bike ride or jog without spooking three of them. Alot of the old hunters around here have passed on, so it's not like I'm running out of game any time soon.
I wanna hear what you think about it.

I am for landowners being able to harvest a somewhat larger ammount of game then a tag only hunter. As long as they do not abuse it by selling the meat, etc.

But otherwise poaching is pretty lame. The herds are usually closely controlled by the game commisions and the distributed tags are limited to a scientifically valid number.

Here in Washington deer are like rats. Most farmers shoot them if they are on their land. I can't say I would never do it myself if I had crops to protect. Shooting them along the highway... if I see you doing it I'm hunting YOU down and introducing you to my Louisville Slugger.

I dont like poaching. The laws and regulations are there for a reason. Mostly to protect animals and wildlife during seasons when they mate and care for their young.

MAny people poach. The fines are usually pretty big. In Arkansas I have seen fake deer set up by the Fish & Game Dept, and when someone stops to shoot and go get their deer, they get busted.

.....so what do you do with all this game? Are you doing this for food?

I don't agree w/ poaching. It has already been said here. The laws are set up to protect the animals. Hunting seasons are set as to give ceratain animals time to give birth and raise thier young and ween (sp) them from feeding off the mother. You may own they land but you don't own the animals. JMO

I agree 100%. I don't sell. I just kill when I run out...

LOL @ Game Commision. We're lucky to get road signs. I that far out in the boonies.

They are here to, but I'lll never get caught. Game warden won't step foot here.

For food, yes. It's not like I'm out every weekend.

That'd be like you tell me I don't own the trees. My land, my meat.

Every year, I see more deer. They are a fucking nuisance to drivers.
Rabbits I drop alot of. I've been skipping on turkey latley.

If you're killing for food, and you aren't just out shooting animals to pass the time, then most people wouldn't have too much of a problem with it. And if you're in as rural an area as you describe, then you probably are not alone in that either.

However, if you feel that owning property gives you the right to kill anything that you can settle your sights on, and any animal on your property is subject to your whims, then you're an asshole.

I agree, if you actually eat what you poach it is less offensive, but still wrong. There are reasons why you dont shoot deer in Spring or Summer. Still if you do not eat what you poach, then you are truly of waste of space.

A buzzard is one thing, even though there are strict laws against shooting buzzards in some states (because they have a purpose). I say it is one thing, c'ause you aren't gonna eat a buzzard. But if you drop a doe in late Spring, and just watch it rot or feed the coyotes & wolves you are very sick person IMO.

I realize it is sort of a double standard, but it is how I feel about poaching. It is bad, but if it is about survival or for food it is less an evil IMO.

Actually, you don't own the wildlife on your property. If you poach, you are stealing. Next time you think you'd like to be a poaching asshole, think how you'd feel if someone was taking your car.....just as you sight in that deer. Try it, but then again a thief wouldn't think twice about taking something that didn't belong to them.

I don't condone poaching. I'm all for freedom etc etc, but we also need to respect the balance of nature, and the local game dept does (in general) attempt to keep a good balance. Why not hunt in season/hunt for as many as you are licensed for and target shoot off season? I know target shooting is not a viceral as hunting, but maybe it can be a good trade off for you?

Mixed emotions. Homeowners probably get a pass since its your figgin land but everyones game though; however on opening day of deer season last year some !@#$ hung me out to dry good. I was hunting state land all day and when I came back to my truck parked on the side of a dirt road, someone had skinned, hind and quartered 3 does (can't take 3 per day so qualifies as poaching) and left the remains about 20 meters from my truck (in plane view of anyone who drove by). They probably figured -that asshole with the black Silverado did it. I was a little upset about this since its an area I hunt pretty often and now people probably think I did it. In all fairnes I have shot some game (geese) out of season by a couple of days which qualifies as poaching.
