Since we have a cool guitar thread, I figure we'll do a drums thread.

I'm a drummer myself and love watching drummers from different genres of music.

Here are a couple o fmy favorites:

Grammy Nominated solo from the most decorated drumming award receiving drummer of all time, Neil Peart of RUSH.

Nobody has heard of this guy here, but he is an excellent drummer. Jojo Mayer

In for Woody's favorite thrash satanic metal crap, hahaha.

Neil Peart is a legend in my mind...Rush is one of my all time favorite bands...but this guy here from Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy is an excellent percussionist!!!

Glad someone early on mentioned him. Most drummers recognize him as one of the best in hard rock/metal

I have seen Dream Theater live several times and his drum solos are the highlight of the concert...he is bad ass!

MA I knew there was a reason I liked you bro

Been an accomplished drummer myself for about 13 years now and I'm still in the distant shadows of some of the names mentioned in this thread. Not a metal fan but have to admit, talent is talent. Metal drumming is a letter away from being mental

Also, for a disclaimer I must warn that anyone who mentions the name travis barker will have their eyes ripped out and have them spoon fed back to you...

You guys have nothing on me. I've been the worlds biggest Rush fan since I was 13. I started to write my own songs/poetry because of Neil.
Neil is a master. My friend knows him well, but he doesn't like to meet new people, so I pray I can meet him before I die. They are also playing Montreal on my bday.......:-)

Here is me at 14 yrs old

Also, my nephew is a kick ass drummer ;-) Here is two new songs he released just today. He used to be a heavy metal drummer. Now he sings and does play drums on these tracks. These songs do not represent his real drumming talent though.

You look like Clark Griswald's daughter in Vacation.

I definitely know everyone that has been posted.

Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews band is awesome.

Keith Moon from Tho Who.

Mike Portnoy from Dream Theatre. I have a DT album in my car right now.

Danny Carey and Bozzio.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned John Bonham or Buddy Rich yet...

Woody, be honest: Do you actually like this type of music?

IMO, It's absolutely terrible.

Honestly, anybody with a bit of skill can pull that off. He didn't play any rudiment besides a single stroke, which really isn't rudimental if you ask me. There was nothing technical or impressive about what he played at all.

I like metal. I didn't watch that video. The link changed on me, so I posted the correct video on in another post. I meant to post Max from Krisiun.

Post up a video of you playing if you think you can do any better.

Buddy Rich is my vote for best ever. Just insane even at an old age

There's no denying his skill, but Portnoy is much better at his composition in his music than his solos. His music is very well thought out and constructed, and damn hard to play. His solos leave something to be desired, only because of him being a top notch musician.

The way he applies rhythm and technical rudiments in odd time signatures is very impressive. His solo work is a bit daft in contrast to his music. That's just my opinion.

Watch him play Dance of Eternity and then you'll know what I mean.

Hey, if that's what you like then that's cool. Everybody has their own flavour of music.

The reason I don't like that type of music because there's nothing emotionally stimulating about it to me in a positive way. In fact, it makes me feel like shit just listening to it. I find that there is no distinguishable melody and the lyrics are typically very negative. I have no base to find anything good to take from it. It's completely foreign to me.

I've been meaning to film a lot of videos. I just bought a sleek new video camera for that very reason (Youtube Channel), so when I get a chance, I'll do some videos and post em up.

Yeah, I understand that not everyone like metal, but can you honestly watch the 3rd video I posted (Max/Krisiun) and tell me it's simple to do what he's doing?

Check this girl out...stumbled across her a while ago, this girl has skill (and I don't mean sexual!!!)

Hey BigBasturd...are you this good???

There's a difference between simple and easy.

His approach is simple but it's not necesarilly easy.

The one thing that stands out to me as taking a lot of skill and practice is the speed of his syncopated burst singles (blast beating is what they call it). Honestly, I can't do it that fast. I can with my right hand, but not my left, therefore the way he plays that, I can't do it.

His double bass drumming is good and consistent, but that's not a rare feat by any mean in any metal music, it's a necessity.

But there's nothing that he is playing that is complex or rudimentally challenging, which = simple.

The guy is definitely a good player. I can't say otherwise if I'm being perfectly honest.

I'll do a Tom Sawyer cover. If I can get to it this weekend, I'll get it posted. Been playing this one for years.

She does a very good job of playing it.

Looking forward to it bro...I would love to get another drum set and teach my little girl...music is in our family blood...I strum and played drums years ago...just like muscle memory though, pick it right back up!

I don't even know who that is

She's good. Nothing too outstanding, but i will have to see her original stuff also. It's a little tough to judge someone's skill on a cover simply because if practiced enough, anyone can do a decent job of it. I can tell she's pretty good though, good sense of time and can do impressive fill while double kicking.

I can probably match or exceed what I've seen of her, but holy fkn shit that was a sick video of Flo

The band I'm in now is more lyrically driven and I do alot of guitar, keyboard, and vocal work, but am still a drummer first. I rarely get to cut loose and rip into a solo like i want to these days....I did at the end of our show Sat night when we were kind of reintroducing the band and saying goodnight, and the whole place was like where the FUCK did that come from...then one drunk guy held up his drink and yelled fuck yeah and saved me from being embarassed

I've been a drummer for almost 30 years, so I was pretty excited to see this thread. A lot of good videos already! I may be adding some soon, but subbed in for sure ;)

BTW...some of my personal favorites have already been named, Neil Peart, Mike Portley, and the drummer from Tool (I forget his name). There is a pretty good drum solo that Shannon Larkin of Godsmack did while on their faceless tour. I don't think he is among the best out there, but he has a lot of talent and they happen to be one of my favorite groups. I may have to throw that video up if someone doesn't beat me to it.

wth all my good bros of EF are turning out to be drummers

one day we'll get a bodybulding drummer competition going where judges decide who looks swole as fk while doing the fastest diddles....

nan you are disqualified, dont bother. not that kind of diddle anyways...

Here's what I mean by technical rudimental drumming within the context of music.

Specifically 0:35 to 0:50 and 1:34 to 1:50 and the repeats of that throughout the song.

Playing that correctly (with appropriate accented strokes), keeping time and transitioning in and out of it is hard. Also, it's tasteful and brings chemistry to the music. As opposed to metalcore drumming that incorporates almost exclusively single strokes cuppled with speed.

This is one of the reasons Peart is considered such a legend in Rock drumming. Because he's always implementing hard to play rudimental patterns within music that not only is difficult, but is attractive to the listener's ear.

Exactly. A lot of rudimentally difficult stuff sounds very impressive to another percussionist, but to someone who doesn't know the difference it sounds like someone is just making a shitload of noise.

Finding that happy medium is difficult, but when you do even the untrained ear knows that shit is hard. Some extremely talented people never get credit for being so talented because they typically hide behind what sounds good to the masses and what makes money (same thing)

And in the same sense, some no talent fucks like barker put up a video of him doing some cheesy 16th note rolls with a shitty rap song backtrack and the world thinks he's fkng gold. Now every time someone hears I'm a drummer, I always get asked if I have seen him play or if I think he's good.

Fuck no. Buddy rich would destroy him left handed..

Would love to hear some of your stuff brotha! My comment was not meant for disrespect bro you know that!

I think Clive Bunker of Jethro Tull was pretty decent by early 1970s rock standards. There's a solo in this cut that kind of gets off to a rocky start but he soon finds his pace.

Looks to me like, in addition to his bad posture, he's making his wrists do all the work instead of letting the sticks float in his hands with a proper knuckle fulcrum. Lots of clams, and in 1970 double-kick wasn't yet a very highly developed art.

I know that bro! No worries my friend. We are doing more studio work lately but I'm working on getting some decent eqipment to do some solo recording!

Btw check out terry ozzio's kit. I don't like his style but holy hell his setup is mind blowing!

Son of a bitch I always always always fucking blow a shitload of money on stuff and then see it on sale like a month later. I dropped 3k at GC on projectors and monitors like 3 1/2 weeks ago...

got your reciept? lol return and rebuy

fug guitars, drums, skin flutes, mouth organs, pan flutes, and all musical instruments that aren't keyboards

I think Jean Paul Gaster of Clutch is a very musical drummer:

There's a solo in there somewhere...

Joey Jordison of Slipknot, the young black dude from The Mars Volta although I think they have a new drummer now, Tim Alexander of Primus.

I knew somebody would post it. Shannon Larkin is a great drummer with a lot of skill.

Too bad ass not to Rick...sorry, but Sully isn't too bad himself bro...that was epic to see live when they toured with Rob Zombie a few years ago, I believe it was the IV album, gotta love these two!

Sully can definitely hold his own, which is evident in the drum duel. That's actually where he got his start.... on the skins! Then he moved on to the guitar and vocals he is now famous for!

God damn Rick! Go get on stage bro! You are dialed bro, your back looks sick as fuck! Godsmack is what I am listening to now...cardio to get as shredded as you dude.

Flo Mournier of Cryptopsy. Broke my hand at that show years ago.

"None so vile" is an album of theirs

Some day I will Man! Thanks for the compliment! Once I add just a little more size I will compete. Probably next summer or so I'm thinking ;)

I meant the shells lol

I have almost exactly the same cymbal setup, I love the sabians.

Spent too many years banging on ZBTs so now I actually appreciate good brass haha

Covers or original material? Have you toured or recorded?

We do covers and originals.

Covers include Van Halen, Collective Soul, Rush, AC/DC, and those kinds of songs. We also have been working on some Rascal Flatts cover songs for a diffeent flavor. We're rockers but we do like easier going music as well.

We have recorded, but it's been 9 years and that old stuff from high school was amateur at best, hahaha.

We have been looking to do a new album for a couple years. We have tons of new material but we haven't gotten to laying down anything. Marriages, school, new jobs, etc have all played a part in keeping us from that.

Out of high school we had an agent that was going to send us on tour but we declined because of college and stuff. We weren't ready anyways for that, so that was the right decision at the time.

Oh, I know. That's why I said DW's first.

Then figured I'd throw out the rest of what I use in case you were curious.

Seriously I know what you mean, I played on entry level kits and cymbals for a few years.

As soon as I bought the DW's and the paragon's it was night and day.

Cheap drums and cymbals sound like complete garbage and I will never by a cheap instrument again.
