Its hex math (base 16)

9 + 9 = 12 (base 16)

12 - 1 - 1 = 10 (base 16)

You said you were looking for a sum, a sum comes only from addition. Subtraction yields a difference, multiplication a product, division a quotient.

launch the calculator, click view and choose scientific. click the button that says hex (over by the left hand side). then press "9 + 9 - 1 - 1 ="
