I love adding a few strawberries or blueberries (I buy the frozen ones) to yogurt and throwing in almonds too. It's one of my favorites desserts (well, healthier desserts).
Commercial products are usually geared for taste and not health. In the case of yogurt, this means that commercial yogurt usually has a high lactose content and is usually loaded with sugar.
"Yogurt is safe because it comes predigested. In one of nature's small miracles, the bacteria in yogurt take over for the missing enzyme and digest much of the milk sugar for you. According to tests by Dr. Savaiano, two bacterial cultures, Streptococcus thermophilus and especially Lactobacillus bulgaricus, that transform milk into yogurt gobble up much of milk's lactose during fermentation, and once in the intestine eat much of the remaining lactose. Be sure the yogurt has live bacterial cultures, as nearly all commercial yogurts do; killed bacteria do not work. Plain yogurts have more anti-lactose activity than flavored yogurts. Buttermilk and acidophilus milk, although fermented, still cause as much distress in most people as plain milk.
Beware of frozen yogurt. When yogurt is commercially frozen, it is sometimes repasteurized and this kills the bacteria. Dr. Savaiano once tested all the brands of frozen yogurts sold in Minneapolis and St. Paul. He found that "none had significant enzyme activity," and thus were worthless against lactose intolerance. Even though some frozen yogurt claimed to contain "live active cultures," there were not enough to do the job.

yea...so this thread is really old, but i thought i'd resurrect it anyhow.
personally, i try to stay away from empty carbs, as i'm sure most of you do. that includes not only the stuff that are obvious empty carbs, but also sugar
and while i realize that sugar is an obvious refined carb (i.e. a big no-no) to most of you here, you'd be surprised at how many people think nothing of it!!! and it's those same individuals who wonder 'why am i fat?' uhhh...dumbass. it's cause you eat so much goddamn sugar. it literally infuriates me, LOL, when i see people muching on stuff loaded with sugar who are, at the same time, oblivious as to why they are fat. ahh, oh well. not my prob. just a general annoyance of our culture, i guess. lol.
annnnnyway - the yogurt..i was browsing around and found this thread while looking at some diet info, etc...and for those who like yogurt (like me), it's real important to check the label for sugar. most have added sugar. not good. not what you want.
i found a brand that has no added sugar, and it's fantastic. called blue bunny lite 85. also fat free. i have an empty container of it conveniently on my desk right beside me, as i just finished one a little while ago. so here's the nutritional facts (if you ask me, pretty damn nice for something good for you):
1 container (6 oz) - not that much, so you could eat 2, if you wanted:
total cals: 80 total fat: 0 g sat. fat: " " cholesterol: 0 g sodium: 75 mg. potassium: 290 mg total carbs: 13 g sugars: 8 g (that's natural sugars, remember. this product has no ADDED sugar) protein: 6 g
all that and 20% calcium. it is sweetened w/aspartame..which doesn't bother me, personally, but i know how some people are with their anti-aspartame-ness and all ..(just teasin!)
try them! i promise you'll love these. i get mine at wal-mart, but maybe other stores carry this brand, too... (?) tons of flavors available. good ones. like coconut cream pie, key lime, pina colada...mmmmm. i love yogurt!! can you tell?!?
I just just WalMart generic. Most all flavor fruit-on-the-bottom ones have 30g carb and 10g protien. Not enough fat to worry about.
A lady saw me eating my yogert today and commented about it "rotting my teeth." I did my best not to say anything about how her obesity was going to do her in first.
yea. i also buy the wal-mart brand. but not the fruit on the bottom kind. i only buy the other kind cause there isn't added sugar. that's my main concern, not the fat content.
