Been looking for a good media server setup for a while. One that would stream my divx encoded movies and such. I have my xbox 360 in my living room and I tried MCE for streaming videos from my Vista Ultimate pc... no luck, it sucked. So I decided to look for another option. Came across TVersity www.tversity.com and it ROCKS.
First off... its free. Second its well built. Third you can interface with PS3's Xbox360, Wii W/browser... Hell anything that has web access via a browser and a media player even your cell phone.
I had to find a walkthrough on their forum to get my 360 set up, followed it through and I was watching movies streamed from my pc perfectly.
In the past I had to hook up my laptop to my tv, ok but the sound wasnt that great and the output on my laptop vid card doesnt make the pic look great. I also tried using the media center option with vista and my 360 but if it uses any special codec it wouldnt play. Then with MCE the streaming wasnt smooth and flawless, it would lag while processing, not sync audio and video... etc.
TVersity didnt require me to make any modifications to my xbox, no special way to run a movie like with MCE. I installed the software on my pc, opened access for my internal network (LAN not WAN for now) gave it a few folders to share on the server, set the process for the server to use my local user credentials so it would actually start on boot with Vista. 15 minutes later I was streaming movies in great picture (min video is set to 1920x1080) and sound.
Also when I say FREE I mean FREE no registering it, no email, name, nothing. Doesnt seem to have any crap installed in the background, has a softpedia review as 100% free of malware, spyware... I urge you all to check it out if you want an easyily set up media server for your home network.
