wrist strength

Does anybody know how to make your wrists stronger? I`m having problems with my bag workouts, even though i am using supporting bandages, i cant get myself to go full power, because i am afraid of injuring myself. Any ideas?

wrist strength can be improved w/ finger pushups and fist pushups. Not sure "grip training" is really the same as "wrist strength", but I'm sure strengthening your grip would help a bit too. Make sure youre wrapping your hands right too. Not too tight, not too lose, plenty around the thumb, etc. You'd probably be suprised that the "perfect wrap" seems looser, sometimes much looser than you thought it should feel. My quick guess is that you may be wrapping too tight. peace

Here is a site with some different ways to wrap up: http://www.boxinggyms.com/tips/handwraps.htm

Personally, I have to wrap a little tight, since my hands sweat a lot, and then it loosens up.

Also, I like to run my wraps under an iron after washing and drying, since I find they wrap much more comfortably without the wrinkles that are inevitable.

Good link. I was curious, do u use "normal" wraps or "mexican style" wraps. I think the mexican style ones are better with their minor stretchiness. peace

I use the normal ones. What does the stretchiness give you that the normal ones don't? Is it snugness without cutting off circulation? like an ACE bandage?

Thats exactly what it is. I like 'em a lot better than the normal ones, u should try em out. peace

I think if you lift weights 3 times a week your wrist strength should be plenty strong. I would practice your hand wrap technique.

Some trainers/boxers say its an art in itself mastering a good hand wrap technique.

Your heavy bag may be really hard, too. Not all fighters agree that punching the 150+ pound heavy bags are the best way to train.

or u can just go to a walmart and buy one of those stress balls for like 5 dollars and it works your grip, wrist and forearm. do it every day ull see the results nuff said

Nick, shut up. It's not 'nuff said', 'cause that's not going to give you anything but the forearm stability of a fucking infant.

You go ahead and use a stess ball, then punch a bag and tell me how good your strength and stability have improved. Second idiotic post I've seen you make. Wow.

As for the original question - strengthen your wrists with wrist curls, reverse wrist curls and hammer curls if that's your concern. Wrapping them right has already been covered, if that's you're issue. If you've got a frail, scrawny frame, I'd add some more thickness to give you more fortification.

I like using the roller bar which is part of the forearm machine station at my gym. This is a 18"slightly knurled bar with a circumference of approx.8".The ends are attatched to a pulley mechanism weight stack. The object is to use both hands in a forward and reverse direction to lift the weight stack to the top, which is a 3foot distance. This can best be described as a motorcycle throttle motion(which is the reverse portion) and the opposite for the forward.only your using one hand after the other.Try doing 4 sets of each direction with about 60lbs and watch your forearms explode and your wrist strength will progress rapidly. Try to work up to 6-8sets eod.

You get strong wrists by lifting heavy ass weight. Never use wrist straps. They make your wrist weaker.

If the weight drops out of your hand. Keep on pushing the envelope with your poundage and your wrist strength will increase.

Particularly,

deadlifts
bent over barbell rows

They will increase your wrist strength. You could do wrist curls/ and reverse but deadlifts do the job if you lift very heavy.

.

The "fist pushups" mentioned earlier work for me, although I call them "knuckle pushups".

Make a fist, then bend your arm to see the alignment of your first/wrist/forearm. It should be in a nice straight line.

Now go down into a pushup and try to maintain that nice straight line. Do your pushups slowly and keep your arms straight even if you have to rock on your knuckles. Try to not overtense yourself to keep this form.

Go down into a half-pushup and have a friend lay down next to you and help gently nudge your hands this way and that into the good alignment.. that will help you feel that good position.

Think of it this way.. what if you punch a bag, and your hand is bent a little? At best you are not translating all the force as fully as you could. At worst you are doing subtle damage to your wrist. A pushup is a fair reproduction of the forces of a punch and proper alignment with a pushup should translate to proper alignment with a punch. Practicing with slow pushups that way should strengthen the various mechanisms.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to try the various suggestions above. The very first recommendation -- the curling of weights -- is actually quite intriguing. Just remember that you can do too much.. all good things in moderation. =)

basically to improve wrist strenght is through a series of push ups, wrist curls , and proper wrist positioning stops pain when u strike. get your self a chin na kit at www.wle.com or a wrist ripper.

I'm not sure if this is covered in the link but do you know what thors hammers are?

also I don't think you should be working full force with the punching bag
strong hits but I wouldn't go full force
I may be wrong
also do you work the back with full gloves on or just wraps?

Im famillar with thor hammers i think there a good training tool, but im more partial to use chin na training stuff with heavy wrist curls. Also when i do heavy bag training i use no gloves or straps. I just train with bags filled with mung beans. alot of problems that boxers have and peeps who complain about have fist pain during street fights is due to uncondition hands. Too much glove training!!!

lol
the problems with barenuckle strikes isn't just the pain from the skin of your hand tho, it's the bone of the hand and wrist that has trouble with that
I'll recomend thors hammers again and say you should at least wear some light gloves when working the bag full force
