World Cup Thread

Fuck Chilavert. He's not even a good goalkeeper. At least if he was he wouldnt play in a 2nd division team. He's the most over-ratted goalkeeper followed by Barthez....

As for Spain, in theory they belong to the top class with Italy, England, Brazil and France..... thing is, thatsnot what we see on the field 50% of the time. Same thing with the others (except maybe for Brazil).

Agreed, Spain has world class playes yet they can't seem to come together as a team.

Cure said:

I actually thought Brazil played like shit their first game. They were lucky to get a win. I just find Spain is not top level like other clubs. They belong in the lower tier like Ireland (who is playing amazing), Sweden, Croatia...i don't think of them on the same level as Italy, Brazil, Argentina or even England. Once they play a good team you'll see what happens. They'll choke like usual.

Chilavert did come forward and try some free kicks but in my opinion the guy yaps his mouth a little too much. That's what i loved about the english today. They went in hard, didn't go down easily and played the game on their feet and not whining and complaining to the referee. Ortega is a goon in my books. Yet again most South American/Central American teams are a bunch of goons and cry babies.

Well, I think how you measure Brazil's first match depends on how you feel about Turkey. Few give the Turks much credit, and if that's how you feel then yes, Brazil was not very impressive. But I think Turkey is tough. They remind me of the Romanian teams of the '90 and '94 World Cups, and I think when all is said and done they'll have gained a great deal of respect. By that measure, Brazil handled a physical, technicially skilled team very well, and I think Brazil will only get better. But we'll see - it is early and you certainly may be right in arguing that Brazil's form is poor.

I admire the same qualities in the English team, and the Premier league as well. I think Denmark plays the with the same attitude and sportsmanship.

I see you're refraining from commenting on Italy! Are you nervous about Croatia and Mexico?

Not really. Not much to talk about, if there was then i'd be talking about it if i was worried. I'm thinking both games will end in wins for Italy and Maldini might not even play tomorrow. I truly think this Italian team has everything to win this World Cup. I HAVE NO WORRIES MY FRIEND!

humm not so sure about that. They had a great team in 94. Roberto Baggio was considered the best and Italy seemed strong in any position.

uhhh ok? They made it to the final and lost in a penalty shootout to the likes of a real Brazilian team with Romario, Bebeto, Tafarrel...etc...The only thing more they could have done was win it.

thats why I believe the 94 team was superior to this one, well at least to the 98.:)

we won 1-0

:D

Don't get me wrong. The italian defense played like shit tonight but i have to blame the coaching of Trap. This guy brings in Materazzi instead of Iuliano who is a veteran and also keeps Inzaghi on the bench for most of the game.

NOW! I thought i saw the worst refereeing in the Brazil/Turkey game but 2 disallowed goals by the linesman which were perfectly good? Fifa should really look into this because it is a shame that they didn't get that equalizer. They should have had at least 4 goals.

Croatia didn't look too threatning until the Italian D decided to fall asleep led by Materazzi. He was to blame on both goals. First one he stood around and second one he got beat through the legs and later deflected the shot into his own goal.

ITALY let this game slip away from them with no help from the wonderful FIFA refereeing.

Forza Italia lololol Seriously I'm happy Italy lost for one reason: I wont hear those morons driving on Crescent at 6 am and yelling like a bunch of dogs.....

Italy got robbed. It was freaking action packed at the end of the match. The ball was flying all over the place. So now we have two teams that got robbed.

The Varnsen said:
One of those italian goals was obtained after a clear Inzaghi foul, so Italy wasn´t that robbed!

Sorry, watch the actual game and that replay. They were both tugging at each others jerseys. So who is to blame? The only difference is the Croatian actually dove to the ground to get the call while Inzaghi satyed up trying to score the goal.

:bawling:

Italys first disallowed goal was wrongly disallowed in my opinion, it was clearly 50/50, and there was no way he was offside.

After Vieri's goal, Italy did pretty much what Germany did against Ireland, they just sat back as though Croatia would never score.

Croatia had a crazy 15-20 mins where Olic and Repaic got 2 goals in succession.

LOL kinda funny

Should have been easy for Italy after they took the lead.

Awesome free kick by Totti I think, that hit the post? Very unlucky.

Portugal 4-0 Poland... Now i look forward to Portugal-Korea, and i think we´ll go through as first, but we have to be carefull as the koreans are far superior to the poles and the americans... At least we proved the first game was a freak that wouldn´t happen twice in 100 games against the americans... What lucky bastards, and we saw that against Korea!!!

We should be hearing from a pretty happy Varnsen soon, I would think.

At least now Poland have nothing to play for. That might help the U.S. rebound from one the worst games I've seen them play in a while.

The 1-1 draw for the U.S. was extremely fortunate. South Korea must have had possession of the ball for at least 80% of the time in the second half. A Reyna, O'Brien and Donovan midfield should have been able to hold the ball at least a little, but that wasn't the case. The game could easily have been 4-1 or 5-1.

I will say this - S. Korea is playing incredibly well, helped a great deal by playing in front of their supporters. S. Korea played the U.S. twice recently and they looked nothing like they did today. S. Korea - Portugal will be a very interesting match.

CONCACAF remain unbeaten! Costa Rica has really surprised me, and I look for Mexico to give Italy a tough match.

I don´t know, its a pitty we lost against you damn americans in a ridiculous game... now we may pay it very hard! You don´t get many opportunities in a World Cup, so mistakes can´t be done as we did against the USA. Well, but the korenas will be nervous as shit against Portugal, as they aren´t used to such a pressure!

Portugals game was alot closer than the score showed. Poland had so many chances to score yet couldn't get anything on net. Portugal is really not impressing me AT ALL. Where is Figo? They really better pick it up against Korea because a tie won't help them at all and i'm sure that's what the Koreans will be playing for.

Also the Americans should be given full credit for the victory against Portugal. They did not win 1-0 but 3-2 and were losing 3-0 at one point. That is not lucky. Lucky was Croatia against Italy.

Anyway most of the favorites are behind the eight ball (argentina, italy, france, portugal) and really need some impressive results to advance.

danish dynamite killed the french player. adieu grande nation,
à la prochaine....!

no goal scored, that sucks for the french team and their supporters. i live near to the french boarder, this will be a
sad day for my neighborhood! i think i have to offer a bottle of
red wine for them.

in a few hours i hope that kamerun will kick the german's ass out
of the world cup (sorry my german friends)

Well, Poland isn´t that bad, and the result is perhaps a little bit exagerated... but so was the american win over Portugal! However, the protuguese had some more very clear chances and it could have easily been 6 or 7-0 with a little bit of luck.
France is out, i´m surprised by their campaign, they didn´t even score a goal... Look out for Danmark... Senegal will go out in the next round...
Looking forward to the Korea-Portugal match! I don´t know what to expect from those guys, now... they were capable of the best and the worst in a week timeframe...

Salut Les Bleus. You really are chokers. No goals?

Cameroon is really playing amazing and Germany is lucky to still be tied. I'm really hoping Ireland advances because i love their style of play.

I'm really nervous for Thursdays game between Mexico and Italy. Hopefully Italy comes out strong and keeps on it for 90 minutes. Nesta will play so the defense looks to be ready and supposedly they will play with 2 strikers with Totti right behind them in the midfield. BEAUTIFUL!

This pressure is driving me nuts and i now know how the Portuguese, Argentinians and Swedish feel.

Fuck you les Bleus !!! Bunch of fucking arrogants. Now let's focus on la Squadra Azzurra, let's see if they can do better...... :)

IMO trap should let play vieri together with inzaghi! nothing against del piero but as long as totti plays, i don't see any
chance for him!

sad day for argentia; i hoped so much that the team could give
some good feelings to the argentinian people. but that's soccer.

Sweden - England 1 - 1
Sweden - Nigeria 2 - 1
Sweden - Argentina 1- 1

We won our group(hardest group in the World Cup) and will play Senegal in the Second Round.....

We have a good chance of winning the Cup now :p :p

never gave a chance to sweden to win this group! i thought
decision for the second place would be between sweden and
england. very solid those scandinavians sweden and denmark
and larsson is back like in his best days

decent the england!!! good to see the argies get knocked out!! denmakr will be tough but there are no easy games now!!! i was really shocked by the way america does't care about their team them beating portugal was bigger news here in enlgnad than in the US

I feel bad for Argentina. I really like their players compared to teams like Spain, Portugal and Brazil who i can't stand.

Sweden played great throughout their games. I like their style of play and did enough to sneak up on people and take the group.

I didn't watch the England game but how can you not win that game? What would have happened if Nigeria had put in a lucky goal? Out of the WC!

I still love the way the Irish are playing.

I AM EXTREMELY NERVOUS FOR THE ITALY-MEXICO GAME. They will be playing in a downpour of rain like the Portugal game the other day. I'm crossing my fingures because if Italy can advance the final could be alot easier than earlier predicted. Also i'm hoping they don't sit back if they score an early goal. They must now proove themselves.

I don't blame you for being concerned about Italy-Mexico, but I think Italy will win because they have to and they never (help me out with the history) seem to crash out of early rounds. Still, Mexico is particularly dangerous at the moment because they're becoming more confident and I think they'll be comfortable with Italy's style of play. I'm really looking forward to it.

The England game was garbage

0-0 against Nigeria after beating Argentina

Big disappointment

Now we face Denmark and potentially Brazil

My bet is that England will fall against Danmark, so you don´t even need to think about Brazil... How many goals did the english score in this first round? 2, one of them from the penalty spot and the other originated by a corner... They find it very difficult to create goal chances and lack creativity and strenght in the midfield. But i can be wrong, and football is such an umpredictable game... besides, they have an excellent coach!
It´s a real pitty the argentinans didn´t go through... well, i don´t like them especially, but as a soccer fan i´ve to be sad, they´re clearly one of the best teams in the world...
Lets see Italy tomorrow, i really don´t expect them to go out, but it will be a close match against Mexico. Croatia may take advantage of the mexican defeat, but still they´ll have to work hard to win against the equatorians...
Then, after tomorrow, Portugal-Korea and USA-Poland...

BUMP for Cure, who probably needs new underwear now, and manny who can vent his frustrations at having to listen to partying Italians somewhere around his home.

mexico looked DAMN good today i have to say. italy should be happy

hopefully england will pull through on sat.......

feel real sorry for portugal, and argentina. don;t like the arghentinians particularly but their country needs something to celebrate

Hey, don´t feel sorry for Portugal, we still have a game left and our chances are good!!
I know, they´ll have to fight hard...

Well, yes, my underwear had a nice brown color earlier today but they got through. Del Piero, Panucci, Cannavaro (who saved 2 goals) had great games. I really like Montella playing with Del Piero and Vieri.

Totti did not show up. this guy has no heart and he looked like he could care less. When the opposite team keeps a shadow on him throughout the game and doesn't give him enough space he just doesn't perform. I feel bad for Trappatoni because the poor guy used his whole bench and couldn't buy a goal. I would really like to see Del Piero become the hero for Italy in this WC same way Baggio and Toto were in the past. He really deserves it.

Hope Portugal loses or ties. No need to play thme in the round of 16. :D

I do and maybe if you played some soccer you wouldn't have those chicken legs that you bitch about.

Did you see some of quads and calves on those players? That's what I call quads and calves. Some of the calves I saw looked freaky!!! Gotta love freaky calves.

The first 5 Minutes of the US / Poland game....

Poland gave the US Defenders a "CLINIC" on penetration and Shots in the box.

I'm was sitting in the GYM sweaty and waiting to Shower watching this game.

People were walking by me as I stared at the TV looking at me like "WHAT THE HELL IS HE WATCHING"?

The US Midfield was doing excellent ball movement in midfield, but when they got near the Poland Goal, their Defenders would collapse in front leaving few open shots.

:bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

adios portugal, i feel sorry for those excellent soccer player
(normally) but the red card against 2 players was too hard to
compensate. now if i'm not wrong, will be mexico-usa! a very hot
match imo, not only from the sport side. ttokkyo vs btg, lol.

POL USA
8 Shots 17
3 Corners 8
22 Fouls 11
4 Cautions 1
0 Expulsions 0

With stats like this, USA should be ahead instead of behind by 2 goals...

U.S., South Korea through, Portugal out.

Donovan's (unfairly) disallowed goal in the fourth minute pretty much doomed the U.S. Poland scored on the restart and that was that. For the remaining 85 minutes, Poland played the defend and counter game which they did well.

I don't know about the clinic part, Y Lifter. Poland had a dream start, that's all. They certainly relished having nothing to play for. The U.S. dominated the match with 65% of the possession and 15 shots to Poland's 7, but it was all set up by the two early goals.

Sorry about Portugal, Varnsen, but again don't blame the U.S. Your guys had been playing together since 1988 or so. They should have been ready to play from the start, but seemed to be looking ahead to the later rounds.

What should have happened is South Korea should have beaten the U.S. and then Portugal would have advanced on goal differential, but still - if Portugal had taken care of their own business they wouldn't be checking their bags for Lisbon.

I feel bad for Portugal but they play as individuals and not asa team. Korea took it to them the entire game including when they were playing at full strength. I still think it's a choking job on their part. All they needed was a tie and they couldn't get it.

The US really showed their colors today. THEY STINK! USA/Mexico know each other well but i don't see the US coming out on top.

Italy/Korea should be a great game but i don't see how they'll score against an Italian defense when they couldn't score on 5 breakaways at the end and most of the second half against 2 defenders. We will see!

Quite right.

Mexico is playing great and they are the better side. But the U.S. is very comfortable playing Mexico and will be playing with no fear.

i hope you will be right with your statement. it's not easy to play
against corea even if they are not able to create many goal chances. their spirit together with the supporters is the dangerous part of them. i hope, italy will score in the first 45 minutes.

Cure said:

I don't know that that's entirely fair. It's hard to draw any conclusions in a game like that when one side goes up 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. The disallowed goal was as ridiculous as those that were disallowed in the Italy-Croatia game and it would have changed the outcome of the game entirely.

I don't know what you can say about the U.S. trying to score on 10 withdrawn Polish players for 85 minutes. I think we would have shown well if the game had been 1-1 after the fourth minute, rather than 2-0 after the fifth minute. And we were playing with 3 defenders from the 20th minute on.

Anyway, it's over. The U.S. is incredibly fortunate but I maintain Portugal have no one to blame but themselves.

agreed 100%

Only the first 5 Min was a Clinic given by Poland to the US defenders in the Middle.

I was like "WHAT WAS THAT Mr. KEEPER ?"

I thought as Mentioned earlier that after Poland was up by 2 they simply played defense and Collapsed in front of the Goal whenever the ball came into the Box. Blocking any long shots.

Great Ball Movement by the American Mid fielders.
Unbelievable fast breaks by the Polish forwards straight down the middle.

Lots of good 50-50 plays with some pushing and fighting for the ball especailly in the corners of the field..

I am dissappointed in the Loss but I would Strongly disagree that the US players Stunk after the first 5 of the game.

I think they were asleep. Then they woke up and said "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" ?

I think any team that has their fate in their hands to advance and doesn't take that opportunity really isn't that great a team. The US needed at least a tie yet by the end were depending on Korea to beat Portugal. If Portugal would have scored then it's bye bye USA.

Look at Belgium, they knew they needed a win and played for one against a good Russian team. Look at Paraguay, Denmark, Sweden..they know what it takes to advance. The US got through on luck and they will get smoked by Mexico.

Cure said:

Agreed, and we're nowhere close to being a great team.

The US needed at least a tie yet by the end were depending on Korea to beat Portugal. If Portugal would have scored then it's bye bye USA.

But surely there's a bit of luck involved, isn't there? Poland's first goal was just one of those scrambles in front of the goal after a corner. Sometimes they're shot wide and sometimes they go in. Olisadebeh's shot just barely went in... that's the way it goes. But then Donovan tied it two minutes later, except the Chinese referee wrongly called a foul on Donovan. That's just bad luck, and since Poland got their second goal on the restart, that's the match right there. It was all over from that point forward, especially since the Poles played the rest of the match with everyone back, like it was the most important game in thier history.

You were saying much the same thing after the Italy-Croatia match. You can't overcome unfairly disallowed goals, that's all there is to it.

As for getting smoked by Mexico, I doubt it. We frustrate the hell out of Mexico. Berhalter will be playing for Agoos and Mexico doesn't like playing bigger teams.

I'm actually perfectly happy with a Mexico win. We don't deserve to make the quarterfinals, and I hope Mexico goes on to the semifinals.

First: The last 3 minutes of Italy-Mexico were definitely pathetic. I feel for those who paid the big price to be at the Stadium. This wasnt profesional at all.

Now Portugal out ? Not very surprised considering the fact they were not playing as a team. Also Portugal was highly overratted. Yes they have Figo but damn did you see him ?

Argentina ? Hell thats a surprise. Even more than France. They had everything (except maybe a good goalkeeper). On the paper they were the best team. But again when every player plays for himself the team suffers....

Ridiculous, just ridiculous... 2 guys sent off in such a decisive match... we had everything to win it! Damn João Pinto, he deserved 3 red cards for that tackle. Yes they are now on their way back and i suppose its a fair consequence to all that they´ve done in this world cup. Again, USA showed their true value today, and they´re doomed with Mexico, who for the sake of soccer must crash those ugly bastards (uff, Mathis and McBride look retarded!) from the states...
Just venting, don´t take me seriously!

I found it quite funny during the preGame hand shakes, how big some of those Polish dudes were compared to the Americans.

I don't know who he was but the one Polish dude on the End of the line looked more like a Rugby player than football.

I really am sorry for you and your team, Varnsen. The team and country must be in a state of shock.

The problem with France, Argentina and Portugal crashing out is it makes the later rounds much less interesting.

Germany moves on. They'll play Paraguay in the second round Saturday.

They destroyed Saudi Arabia 8-0 but had their hands full with Ireland and Cameroon so it certainly isn't the Germany of before.

Still, they have a good draw to the semifinals so they're far from out of it.

that germany/cameroon game was brutal. I don't know how many card were given out but there were tons.

The US may have gotten into the 2nd round but the stumbled their way into it. Losing to poland isn't exactly what you want coming into the next round.

I'd say the most suprising team so far has to be Japan. Yeah they've played some weak opponents, but still.

Yea, I bet the other teams players in the Second will be looking at the Americans and saying "What the heck are they doing here"?

Any way you can get it, it's still making history.
Not since 1930 or so have we made it to the Second in outside U.S. play.

I was watching the US-Poland game but once Poland scored it's third goal I knew it was over, so I switched to the Korea-Portugal game which was 0-0 at the time because I knew what happened there had more impact on the fate of the US team. Not 5 seconds had passed before Park nutmegged the Portugese goalkeeper (what a terrible effort on his part) and I went nuts. Kind of odd and pathetic that I was watching that game praying that Portugal wasn't going to sneak one in (which they almost did SEVERAL times) rather than rooting for the US.

Weird and unsatisfying but I'll take it. Hopefully the US players feel kind of pissed of and unsatisfied too and they take it out on the Mexicans. Ironically, it's definitely a better draw than Italy.

I follow CONCACAF and i've never seen Mexico play the way they played yesterday. I know the US and Mexico face each other alot throughout the year and it will be close but i still see Mexico advancing. Good luck to the US because i just don't like Latin Teams.

I was on the American bandwagon up until they played Poland. I'm guessing i'm a little harsh on them but i really like this Polish team for future WC's. They are VERY YOUNG and could surprise. I thought they were going to surprise this WC but they did not.

The Varnsen[\B] I feel really bad for Portugal. Italy was that close also and i know how you feel. I've seen tackles like João Pinto's cause broken ankles if he were to turn over. Just brutal. But Baia SHOWED UP TODAY! and he almost saved the goal that went in. He saved like 4 breakaways at the end. I still freak out that Korea couldn't score with 2 defenders.

joao pinto did pretty much a running scissor sweep :D portugal are in a lot of trouble if they think playing like that is what you wanna do when your backs against the wall. pity as they were one of the fav's south korea played wel, them and japan have impressed me

USA are gonna have a TOUGH game against mexico, mexico look v.impressive in terms of their teamwork, their passing is amazing.

im afraid england's gonna worry so much abnout brazil they lose sight of denmark who are looking strong

For the first time in my life i actually feel bad for England and want them to advance and kick the shit out of Brazil.

Danielson, i agree that Mexico played well but if the US can chase and give the mexicans fits unlike the italians who just stood around and watched they might have a shot.

I really can not stand to watch soccer at all. But the fan stories are the best of any sport going. Just read something about the entire japanese team getting naked in their locker room and jumping up and down together. WTF is that?

THank you Korea!!!!!!!, i take no shame in getting a little help getting in the next round (after all ecuador bailed italy out of being eliminated) As a US fan it would be hard not to root for Korea against Italy. GO KOREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on have some faith

Its Denmark 0-3 England at Half Time

England will not worry about Brazil.

We have the players to beat anyone left in the world cup so long as we play to our strengths and do not keep giving away posession and defending too deep.

Absolute solid performance so far, we should go on and win 5-0, there is no point in sitting back in the second half.

When we got 2 goals, I thought we were starting to sit back and give away posession with too many hopeful balls.

So far so good.

I have to watch the England/Denmark game live on Univision (which I only usually watch to see the hot latiin girls in those chauvanistic variety shows or soap operas) this morning because none of the American stations seem to care -I guess Winter fly fishing or boring baseball highlights are more important............
Just saw Germany won in a close game 1-0 -I thought it would be a very tight game and I guess it was. What are their chances against Mexico (assuming they win against the U.S.)?
Whoops second half......

love watching the games on univision, even if I don't know what they're saying most of the time. on ESPN they talk way too much.

Denmark 0-3 England FT

Awesome display, we were on a different level, we had no weakness, Butt, Beckham, Heskey, Owen, awesome. Made a couple of defensive mistakes in the late second half, but other than that we are solid in defence with Cole, Campbell, Ferdinand and Mills. I think Mills in particular is superb.

I dont care who we play, were gonna beat them, Brazil or Belgium.

COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1B

:mix: :D ;)

everyone is watching football over here.........just glad we made it i was seriously worried

tennis and cricket are on, and nartional sides are doing phenomanally well, but 98% pf all the supporters even if they are at the grounds are watching the world cup :lmao:

Just watched the Germany/Paraguay game. Yet again Germany proved to be lucky. I still think they are not that great.

I did not watch the England/Denmark game yet but i'm happy the English won. Here's hoping they KICK THE LIVING SNOT out of Brazil. I also hope Spain beats Ireland (even though i love Ireland) because if Italy goes through i would want to send Spain packing.

I laugh at the fact that they always have to have some English speaking guy with some 2nd rate American commentator (who BTW doesn't know what the hell soccer is) in order to give the broadcast an 'aura' of credibility.
Yeah, Univision isn't bad at all-my Spanish is being awakened from its slumber-shit when you hear 'pelota' for the thousandth time, you remember what the hell it means :)

lmao about the british guy. too funny.

in reality, soccer is really a simple game, you don't need too much explanation as to what's going on. Plus it's funny to hear these guys speaking spanish so fast, then they throw in a Budweiser or Coca Cola here and there.

HAHAHA..I can't keep up with what they're saying either with the exception of the occasional Coca Cola, Meel-er light thrown in.
I don't have to know what those Latinas in some of those Univision shows are saying...I'm not listening, I'm ogling :)
