Is there such a thing as too large of a diamond in an engagement ring? Where is the cut off line for tackyness if there is one?

Yes.

I have small hand with "tiny" (the Korean nail girls kill me when they say that) fingers. So something large, would be too big and look tacky on my hand.

She has long slender fingers so I imagine there might be some resemblance to your own. So what Karat would you consider the largest before being too large?

1 carat may be too small if she has long fingers. I've heard the industry standard is 2 - 2.5 Karats. I would start there. I think 4 and over would be too big.

You also want to look at the other c's as well when picking one out (cut, clarity and color).

Darling, learn from Uncle Freddie's experience and Elizabeth's (Taylor): it's only tacky if it is on someone else. I like my diamonds BIG!!!

LOL.

My mom's 25th anniversary ring is 3 carats, I never wore it but i know it would be the perfect size. Maybe 4 would be okay, but, I have really small fingers. You don't think something big would look tacky on a small hand? Does the cut come into play (Emerald vs. Round vs. Princess)?

Disclaimer: Not that size matters; its the love behind it that does. But, if the person is going to go all out and can afford it, I think the size should fit the finger.

I agree with NYC. Also I think she should get to help pick the setting. The setting for a lot of the way bigger stones sit up really high off the finger. I know people who don't wear their rings or don't really like to because the stone sits too high and it's catches on everything.

I think "Princess" cut is the most beautiful cut of stone...with white gold on a high setting with baguettes on the side.... :verygood:

I think the setting is the most important part of the ring. I know men think we love diamonds, but I like a simple solitare. Nothing else. Plain and simple.

I have two ruby rings. One belonged to my grandmother, old-fashion style (from the 50's), small stone, nice and plain. The other has a bigger stone with diamonds on the side. I prefer the ring with the small stone.

its more about the quality of the diamond then the size in my opinion.. get a perfect 1 karat.. best clarity, color, and cut.

its not the size .......

wait.. different post

tee hee..

take her shopping just to 'look' see what sparks her attention. Then go from there.

My old ring (no longer worn) is in a platinum setting that I designed myself. The Diamond is an oval and sits down into the ring, horizontally. Its flat across the top and I thought beautiful. Yes, I would have destroyed a ring that sat high due to my more athletic lifestyle. Besides, I wouldn't want some huge rock that I would be devastated if something happened to. I'm a ring 'loser' and destroyer, so I know what works best for me.

I would rather spend the additional money taking a honeymoon to a place we would always remember and cherish. :)

you would be surprised at the cost ...how much are you planned to spend ...a .75 -1k diamond that has good color (not perfect) 1 to 2 small inclusions(very small cant see without a hoop) will run you around 9,000 to 15,000 depending on the cut and a 1k solitar is big ...it may not sound like it ...put it in a good setting total weight around 2k and you will notice that people will make a very big deal over it ...the best part is you get to brag about the quality you can get a really yellow large diamond 2k for the same price
if you going to put it in a yellow gold setting you can have some color and it will be hard to tell …if you put it in a white gold or platinum setting the color will show very easily so make sure to get the right color for your setting ..other than that get what you (mostly her) likes …have fun and good luck

ok I give up!! just searched for engagement rings and picked a couple that I thought were nice. I like plain and simple rings too! Actually, I dont even wear much jewelry.

hey the good ones are never advertised ..you would want a custom or limited edition ..that way you wont see anybody wearing your ring
