Wireless Router Install help!

beastboy

New member
I just got a Dell TrueMobile wireless router.

To install do I?:

Plug into the my desktop, load the software on that, then load it up on my laptop?

ha. does your router come with instructions? installing your software really isn't necessary, usually you can configure wireless routers with your web browser. Your instructions should tell you what IP address you need to type in the address field in your browser. make sure your router is hooked up to your DSL/Cable modem and make the router get an IP address automatically.

no.

no.

I guess I'll have to wait to get home...all the instructions say is to load the software on the desktop that is hooked up to the cable modem and not to have the router plugged in. Then is says to follow the instructions. I don't see any IP info.

strange.

one bit of advice, next time don't use a wireless router you got as a prize in a McDonalds Happy Meal.

Hey tools, the instructions give you minimal help....the were written in Malaysia with a crayon. I haven't gotten through it yet, just wanted a preview. Pricks.

You have your wireless nic card installed in your desktop or laptop?

If it's anything similar to the Linksys WIreless router that I installed, you basically plug the output from your calbe/dsl modem into the Wireless Router.

if all else fails read the instructions:

I found this on another messageboard:

Dell TrueMobile 1184 Wireless Router Problem . . .
Just wondering if anyone in my area has heard of this problem. This router works fine from an internal viewpoint, but will not grab an external IP from Cogeco (or at least not so far). The router was purchased in January along with an Inspiron laptop from Dell and after spending a few hours with regular tech support the problem was escalated to the next level of support here's a summary of what was covered:

These same steps were attempted on 2 different cable modems in 2 different physical locations at either end of Windsor, and was also performed using 2 different 1184 routers at both locations (Dell sent a replacement after my first call assuming the router was bad, so I kept it while troubleshooting). Also it is regular Cogeco with 3 IP's, not the light version which only gives 1 IP address and seems to have trouble letting go of the previous MAC address sometimes.

Modem 1 - RCA DCM305
Modem 2 - Samsung InfoRanger SCM 100R

Router - Dell TrueMobile WX-6215D

- out of the box the router was connected to a pc and the cable modem

- logged in to the router at »my.router[?] got the login prompt and logged in with the default "admin" & "admin"

- all the cables involved were straight cables and tested 1 by 1 by connecting directly to the cable modem and grabbing an external Cogeco IP

- when no Cogeco IP was assigned to the router I powered the pc, router and cable modem down, waited 30 seconds, powered up the modem and waited for the service staus to come back on for the modem, powered the router up and then powered up the pc

- the router issued an internal ip to the pc in the right range 192.168.2.2 and the gateway and dns were 192.168.2.1, successful ping of the 2.1 address with 1 ms response

- the firmware shipped with the router was 1.92 and it was discovered that there was a new version 2.12 available, the firmware was updated but did not correct the problem

- the tech said he had never run into this problem before and reassured me that this router should grab an external IP from Cogeco with no problem whatsoever, right out of the box

- screen by screen we went and checked every setting in the router to make sure that for some reason any settings were out of whack, the only thing that was noticed is that by default the router discards external pings so I enabled it and went through all the same step by step process as listed above with it enabled

- tech support is going to be calling me back with a bit more research after this weekend, but suspects that I will have to return the router(s) for a refund, and also let me know that they have never heard of any problems like this but admits they have no way of knowing any demographics of what people in what areas are using these products
