wireless modem?

wireless is ok. You have to have a tower pretty close though.
Mostly used for businesses. My wife works for a small wireless net provider.

Other than that .....try t1, t3, ds3...etc....
it's expensive though.

whats that?

very fast fiber optic connections, usually used for backbones.

I think the line that runs from the US to Europe across the floor of the atlantic ocean is an OC192 fiber optic Sonet connection.

Bandwidth Market offers a great United States nationwide OC-48 network, with three closed, interconnecting OC-48 loops. The cost is less than $300,000 per month for a one year term, with no installation charges, yet with some of the industry’s best Service Level Agreements. The first loop includes Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Denver. The second loop includes Denver, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington DC, Cleveland, Chicago, and Kansas City. The third loop includes Washington DC, New York City, Boston, and Cleveland. If you are not yet ready for the OC48, we can provide similarly good pricing for lower speed circuits, for example, less than $25,000 per month for OC3 speed.

Is there anybody within line of site from your residence that DOES have access to a high speed network?

Do you live in an apartment bldg or with a bunch of roomates?

How much you want to spend /month?

I've heard little good things about sat dish. Bandwidth metering, high prices, large latency, etc. But, it's been awhile since I looked, since I was able to get DSL.

If you are within site of a house that has highspeed access... you've got to convince them to let you leach from them. Pay half their bill, something like that. You'd need to setup a wireless link from their house to your house. Some directional antenna would do great. Save your pringles cans... This method has been done before.

not true, I run my linksys wireless router while using my cell phone, and microwave oven (which also transmits at 2.4 Ghz) and notice very little degradation in speed.

INternet via a satalite dish sucks. It's only goes down, you still need a modem to upload.

Wireless is still too imature to mess around with. It's a good internal medium, in an office space or an apartment. Externally too far and too few to do any good.

DSL is your best bet unless you are wiling to dish out serious cash for a something better. Verizon had differnent DSL packages that you can choose from. I have 768K download and 128K upload for $40.00 a month. I share the internet connection and we both download lasrge files and the lag is minimal.
