Windows XP question...

Ok, I am at download.com and tried to download something last night. It was a nightmare trying to get it to operate, with to this morning still has not been functional. I went back and noticed that the platforms it was supported on was 95/98/NT. Do you think it is because I am using XP that it is screwing up? Also, tried to install a learning course off a CD and it is not functioning at all. The course is about 2 years old... again, could it be that it is not compatible with XP?

Generally if the Software is compatible with w2k or NT then it should be compatible with XP.

Win XP has the ability to load and run programs in compatibility mode. It makes the software being loaded run like it was a previous operating system.

Now, the ? is can Mr. Gayfer figure out how to do it?

Negative.

There is quite a difference in the kernel from NT to 2K and a world of difference between NT and XP.

The message I am commonly getting is a popup box with ???.DLL is not supported

Anal, I believe that learning course you tried to install, "Spooning with Cornholio Basics" is actually not compatible with Windows XP. Wodin posted a thread on this earlier last week and was having the same problem.

DLL's are application extentions that interact with the operating system.

This is the very reason that compatibility mode was made.

Are you using the consumer or professional version of XP?

Pro version. But I have no idea what .DLL was in the app I downloaded off the net.

I had problems like that about a week ago and it was driving me insane. Not only did I get that .dll error message, but my firewall was acting bizarre and I kept getting a Compaq file error message. I'm just a regular person not a computer pro LOL, but all I did was restore everything and set back my system to my settings in August. :D Prior to that I tried to delete some files, but it didnt work so that's why I just restored everything...It worked so I'm happy and things are back to normal. Sorry can't help you with compatibility concerns, but just adding that the restore function is there and you can get back to normal. lol :)

Right click on the application, choose Properties.
Click on the Compatability tab, and run it under wn2k or win95 or something.
