Unless you have a tablet I think 7 would be the better choice.

The interesting part is whether or not this will be enough to stop the pirating of the OS OR if this OS will turn into another Vista.

No thank you. I've been a working in the IT industry since 1985. I left Microsoft 11 years ago and never looked back. I run Linux...doesn't cost me a dime and I don't have to run Spyware, anti-virusware, malware....blah blah blah....And I don't have to reboot every other day. **grin**

There was an article over at tomshardware about a guy who tested it and said it was an unmitigated hot mess. It was so bad that he said if they don't do something to drastically change it, it might sink the windows brand. I laughed hysterically when he said "it makes your teeth itch" cause it's so obnoxious. That is flat out hands down the single worst review of any kind of software i have ever read.

MarketWatch Slams Windows 8, Calls it Unmitigated Disaster

It's pretty damn cheap so there must be something wrong with it. :)
It's surprising you can upgrade from XP to 8 for that price. They've never offered an upgrade that cheap before I dont think.
But an old XP machine probably couldn't run the modern bloated Windows OS correctly anyway. Better off with Linux.

never tried linux but i think i might consider it when it's time to upgrade the desktop. I'm kind of tired of apple/microsoft/sony products. IT's all souless anymore.

Like I said earlier, I've been running Linux exclusively for years now and never looked back.

The beauty of Linux is that there's so many distributions to choose from that there's choice. If you want something to "just work", Ubuntu may be your choice. If you want to "customize" and want performance, Gentoo may be the way to go.

The UI is definitely geared towards tablet/mobile support, but overall the OS is said to run faster and more efficiently.

Plus it runs 462 out of the world's 500 fastest super computers. Windows runs only 2. The advantage of Windows though is it runs pretty much everything.

but seriously has anyone ever heard someone say they were so annoyed by something their teeth itched? I'm not sure you can trash a product any harder than that guy did without literally taking it to the toilet and defecating on it. I will staying away.

I tried Ubuntu for a while and I liked it. But I'm back to Windows. There were a couple Windows based programs I was using that didn't have good Linux alternatives. But that was a few years ago.
And there is definitely a learning curve to it. Most people have been using Windows for years, and are therefore Windows experts more or less. With Linux, you obviously aren't going to be as good when you start out. And its kind of frustrating when something you could do in Windows in 5 seconds takes a half an hour in Linux just because you haven't done it before.

But almost everyone says that if you stick with it long enough, you eventually love it. I think about running Linux, but to tell the truth, my Windows 7 machine is a frickin cadillac as far as I'm concerned. I've got no motivation to switch.

yeah but gaming is damn near impossible in linux

There should be a check box when you install it - "What kind of computer are you using: (1) Tablet, (2) Notebook/Laptop, (3) Desktop", the result of which determines which UI features are installed. But it looks like they didn't think of that, and are trying to force the Metro interface on everyone.

Businesses will stay with 7.

Too bad SEGA doesn't make OS's hey Red lol.

I have tried and tried and tried to get to like Ubuntu I just cant. Maybe for a desktop but for a laptop the gfx card always seems to run at full tilt which really destroys the ability of the processor to stay cool. I put it on 2 different HP envy laptops and also ran it in vmware on my desktop.

Try Gentoo or Mint.

Fuck i just want them to make another game system. I'm so over all these clownbags.

SEGA was no different lol. Remember those Sonic vs Mario commercials back in the day, they took a lot of cheap shots at competitors when they didn't have much to back it up with. Fast forward through the years and how many classic, critically acclaimed franchises have they started?

sega was god, end of story. lols

DC was the best console to date and only lost out to Sony because they strongarmed 3rd party developers to be exclusive to them. Alot of the big 3rd party house's preferred the architecture of the DC over the Ps2. So yeah they were different, Sony and Microsoft want to do too much with their console's. They want to integrate the entire living room into one unit so they can route all the potential cash flows through their properietary hardware. Sega just made video games, and damn good hardware.

ANd about this windows 8....if it won't play xbox games it's got nothin for me. Waste of money.

I loved Road Rash 2 for Genesis. But the software just couldn't keep up with what Nintendo and later Sony were doing. There's no way around that. Can't knock them for having more resources to do so. Sony developed the vastly superior soundchip in the SNES, which gave it near-CD quality sound out of a 16 bit cartridge. Speaking of, Nintendo can actually be credited for there ever being a Sony Playstation. If they didn't screw them over in their partnership for the SNES CD system (on a public stage no less), they might not have even released it themselves. Probably for the better as Nintendo is too stubborn to this day.

As for SEGA, they seemed to spend more time and money advertising how much cooler they were than Nintendo instead of making ground breaking games. I did like the Dreamcast, but SEGA's disappearance from the hardware scene was ultimately the result of their own (numerous) bad decisions.

INTERNAL CONFLICTS is the downfall of SEGA

Sony better be careful if they want to avoid the same fate. It sounds like in-fighting has been the cause of their decline in a number of markets.
