muscle_geek said:Fonz, I believe that your point about the strategic advantage of holding Iraq is probably the reason we went to war. Iraq is a threat to the US, just like any other western civilization hating nation. They absolutely, without a doubt, have WMD. Lets get that out of the way. While traditional US haters like Russia and China would present more of a military challenge, the biggest, most immediate threat to the US or western civilization as a whole are muslim extremists. As we have seen during the coverage of the war, Iraq and other middle east countries have a great ability to propagandize their population. They also are willing to make their people suffer in order to spend money on their arsenal of weapons. I do not believe these countries build their arsenals for defense. The middle east is a problem that must be dealt with. I think that cleaning up Afghanistan, and annihilating Iraq is a strong strategic move. If we can follow these acts up with a peace plan in Israel/Palestine, then I believe that we could change the course of history. This is what I think the war was about. I do not believe the war was about oil, PNAC, or even Iraqi freedom. Maybe I'm naive, but I think the war was part of a bigger plan to keep the US safe. I don't know if the majority feels like I do, but I feel much safer now than I did in the days, months, after 9/11.
I'm sure they fabricated WMD.....most probably chemical agents in mobile labs..but thats as far as they got.
Nuclear and biological arsenals are non-existent..that much is highly probable.
In politics, it always serves to follow the money trail.
Both Cheney and Bush sat on Oil boards.
I'll bet the bank they will get a nice plush stipend once their term in office expires. Plus, their "oil friends" got the contracts and preferential oil prices.
What the war was about...was GREED nicely cloaked in good intentions.
I'm not anti-invasion..quite the opposite..Hussein had to be removed...but its astonishing to see how much BS Bush is getting away with.
What does Bush get(Greed):
1. An Iraq-Israel pipeline
2. Preferential oil prices
3. A US Base in the ME(Basically controls the ME)
4. Helps re-build the Iraqui infrastrucure(Tied to #2)
Good Intentions:
1. Free the iraqui People
2. Get rid of a terrorist-friendly Govt.
No Govt. in the world is altruistic.
Bush saw he would get a nice return(so to speak) from invading Iraq so he did.
Problem with what he did, is he basically steamrolled over the UN...almost to the point of crippling it.
Thats my only problem with the iraqui Invasion. He set the UN back 20 years at least.
