Will installing Crossover Office Pro...

Crossover Office allows me to install Win32 apps seamlessly in Linux supposedly. If it is truly so, I'll never have to load a windows OS again. I can bend Bill Gates over my desk.

...on my linux box allow me to fsck Windows users in the a$$?
Do you HAVE to have MS Office? Why won't OpenOffice do?

I use only Linux at home. Although I do have a Windows XP vmware guest OS I rarely use it. I even have Internet Explorer working via Wine just so I could use Flash 9.

Openoffice loses a lot of my excel formatting. It's a bitch having to reformat cells when moving back and forth between OpenOffice and MSOffice. CrossOver Office uses a lot of the wine libraries but seems a lot more stable. I'm running the Windows shockwave plug-in on Linux firefox 2.0 now via CrossOver Office. Getting ready to Install Word and Excel 2003 via CrossOver Office.

x-over works well, but it isn't a 100% solution. It just depends on what you are trying to install.

If all you need is Excel, CrossOver kicks ass. The more interest there is in something, the more likely someone has tweaked CrossOver to make it run. There's a list of supported apps (and how well they work) at their website. Office apps are where the interest is, so they're solid.

For other programs, CrossOver is probably always going to need those tweaks... because Windows is such a clusterfuck that every program has a way of hitting a different piece of Windows that no other program knows or cares about... and Microsoft likes it that way.

I used CrossOver for some other apps that were not "officially" supported and it was pretty good for those. It was real nice not having to switch boxes or reboot just to open up a trouble ticket, or poke the weird-ass DNS tool this one job demanded we use.

I bought and installed CrossOver Office, going to check it out tonight. The only windows app I really need is Excel. Possibly LabView, if I take on a new position.
