Why whey Isolate Rocks! High Biological value (BV)

Once you understand what a Biological value is, for protien, you can see why whey isolate is inferior. :D

Although one gram of protein will contain four calories in all cases, the amount of protein which our body can digest and use for muscel building purposes is not always 100%. In fact, the most easily digestible natural protein source are whole eggs, where the percentag net utilization by our bodies is 94%. Because eggs contain the best protein digestion rate of any natural source, eggs are given a protein rating of '100' and all other protein containing food sources are rated according to how digestible they are compared to egg protein.

AS we all know (and SHOULD be using), there exists protein powders which digest even easier than egg protein and can be utilized by our bodies even more than the 94% that natural egg protein can be. These protein powders would have a protein rating higher than 100 on the scale below.

So here it is... Biological Value

The BIological Value (BV) is a scale of measurement used to determine what percentage of a given nutrient source is utilized by the body. The scale is most frequently applied to protein sources, particularly whey protein. Biological Value is derived from providing a measure intake of protein, then determining the nitrogen uptake versus nitrogen excretion. THe theoretical highest BV of any food source is 100%. To break it down .... - BV refers to how well and howe quickly your body can actually use the protein you consume.

Here is a list of various sources of protein and their respective ratings.

Protein Ratings
FOOD PROTEIN - RATING
Eggs (whole) - 100
Eggs (whites) - 88
Chicken / Turkey - 79
Fish - 70
Lean Beef - 69
Cow's Milk - 60
Brown Rice - 57
White Rice - 56
Soybeans - 47
Whole-grain Wheat - 44
Peanuts - 43
Dry Beans - 34
White Potato - 34

As far as sources of protein created in the lab are concerned, here is a short list of some protein sources you can find in most supplements common today. YOu cann see how they compare to the natural sources listed above:

Protein Ratings
PROTEIN SUPPLEMENT - PROTEIN RATING
Whey Protein Isolate - 159
Whey Protein Concentrate - 104
Casein - 77
Soy - 74

You can see that whey isolate has the highest BV of any protein source. You get the most bang for the bucl. This is usually why it is so damn expensive. I recommend to buy flavourless whey isolate. That way you are not paying for any sugar weight, just pure high grade protein.

I also would recommend taking it with water although many dont for this reason...

Good info, the only problem I have (as with GI values) depeneding on where you go you end-up with different BV values for proteins.

For instance the Egg People say:

Whole egg - 93.7
Milk - 84.5
Fish - 76.0
Beef - 74.3
Soybeans - 72.8
Rice, polished - 64.0
Wheat, whole - 64.0
Corn - 60.0
Beans, dry - 58.0

Agreed,Isolate is the cream of the crop.Superior AA profile, and doesn't cause all the stomach discomfort of the concentrates.Don't forget about Micellar Casein as well, has the same benefits as WPI,with the added bonus of being absorbed much slower, thus giving a timed release and less potential of oxidation.

Good info!

Great stuff Mavy, thanks for posting this bro. Personally I use All the Whey's WPI and Micellar Casein as Huck also suggests. I couldn't agree more that WPI and MC are indeed the best.

Mav don't you mean "superior" instead of "inferior" at the end of your first sentence bro? :)

ion exchanged whey isolate is the only thing I use.

What really fucking IRKS me is that all the so-called "advanced" protein powders in the magazines and vitamin store is nothing but whey concentrate. Can someone name a premade whey isolate brand. Labrada is mostly whey concentrate. So are other brands like myoplex.

Hahaha, hey 40, hows it goin? Ya .. I'm a dumbass! I have been writing a proposal for the last 2 hours and my brian is screwed, needed to take a break. I'm sure I am going to start writing about protein in this proposal now. ahhaa

Micellar Casein? I have never heard of this, gonna look into it. I wouldnt mind a slower acting protein throughout the day, and then the fast WPI after workouts. I didnt want to go with a concentrate throughout the day though because the shit plugs me up. WPI goes down like water for me.

thx9000: ya ... you will see that the BVc varry a little between what everyone says. They actually say that WPI has a bv between 100-159 (not always 159), depends on how it is processed.

kbrkbr: I dont really know. I know that in Canada, Canadianwhey.com has the best prices on an isolate that I can find. Allthewhey in the US is supposed to be a very good source of high quality protein at a great price. You will have top shop around.

AAP: Ya I hear you... I tend to stay away from big name brands. You really have to watch the "Mixes" of Concentrate and WPI. Most of these are like 90-10 Con-WPI, so you are really getting ripped. They are not lying, when they say it is a mix, but you are still not getting a 50-50 split.

The GNC guys once told me that you can tell a good WPI, because when mixed it has many airbubbles, but i have never really noticed this to a huge degree. I aslo think that most GNC people dont know crap! hahaha.

Have a good one bros,
Mavy

Your bowels can immediately tell the difference in the two, lol.

Hahaha ... I didnt know that the hell you were talking about Satch, (mr. spelling bee champion). Dosent that speak for itself!! That dosent make me feel any better ... I am late for work and have to give a huge presentation in front of a lot of people (i hate doing that kind of shit), and I got about 2 1/2 hrs sleep last night. Should be interesting.

Take Care,
Mavy

All of this is very true, but we need different proteins for different times of the day... For instance, my ion exchanged whey taken at night before bed as an anti-catabolic shake is inferior to the night time formula I had www.proteincustomizer.com whip up for me.

I had them make me this:

30% micellar caseain
30%casein
20%egg
20%milk isolate.

This has solved my night tiime dilemma of how to make my protein last longer through a night of sleep.

I've been using Isopure for about 3yrs now & I've found it to be a good tasting, easy to drink whey isolate that isn't that expensive if you buy it in the 8.8lb tubs. In fact gram for gram it's actually cheaper than most. I get 8.8lbs (44 50g servings) for around $58 at www.dpsnutrition.net It's also loaded with aminos. The most appealing hting to mean is the taste & how thin it is which makes it very easy to drink. I used to use myoplex & that like a lot of other shakes was like drinking a cup full of cake batter w/powdery lumps in it.

Any opinions on CFM Whey Isolate vs. Ion Exchange Whey Isolate? I've used CFM so interested in hearing the differences (and yes I 've read the stuff proteinfactory has to say about the differences on their site). I'm looking for experiences from guys who've tried them both.

Eviscerator, how is proteincustomizer's service? Any complaints?

I ordered and 5 days later I got it... No complaints at all. Since it was my own formula there is no "Nutritional Facts" insert breaking down the Carb/Protein/Fat content, but I can pretty much guestimate my 50-60 grams.

taste?

odd, that many of you have problems with the concentrate, my bowels have never experienced any troubles, and I drink about 4 or 5 whey protein concentrate (plain) shakes /day

I ordered the chocolate and it isn't bad. There is definitely a good chocolate taste, but it lacks sweetness. I usually add a packet of splenda and it does the trick.

Labrada V60 or my favorite Synergy Labs Ion Exchange whey taste much better, but since I only take 2-4 scoops of this a day I can't complain. Taste wasn't high on the list when I ordered this... I was looking more for content.

oh bro, i hate giving presentations too, with a passion. :) good luck to you bro!

Hahhqhahahaha .. it went alright guys. There was a lot of cute women I was presenting to. It made it both harder and better. hahaha. Just pumped a lot of coffee into me before hand. It really works for me because I dont drink it usually. Woke me right up, but crashed double hard after.

Bought some Micellar Matrix - Vanilla from ISS on the way home today. Got a big pail! Cheers guys. Cant believe I have been missing out on this stuff.

As far as Whey Isolate goes, IMO the very best out there is All The Whey. These guys actually provide most Whey Isolate to all of the manufactures out there. I have many long conversations with the owner and I am going to get some good information on why Ion Exchange Whey is actually no good. Whey Iso rocks, and I actually drink it plain.

Milk = whey + casein?

Why does milk protein have such a low value?
Isn't milk protein made up of whey and casein? Does anyone know the proportions?
