There it is!!! Finally. The ultimate question here. Why anything? Why imprison? Why put to death? Why???

Many reasons for the modern prison. More civilized (!!) Rehabilitate (!!!)

How does society fix a problem that as of yet has no answer? What causes criminality in some, yet not in others? How do we correct this? Are all crimes worthy of rehabilitation? Does the serial killer have the same moral value as a the woman who kills her husband who beats her ass every night?

Rehabilitation is perpetuated by those who have faith in the belief that the human mind is malleable and can be shaped by outside agents. This is not to say that rehabilitation should not be tried in SOME cases, but all crimes are not warranted this type of effort.

The most modern reason is now, of course, profit. ( and vengeance)

This is a big factor as I stated in another post, but it is not the sole reason for the penal system. If there was no profit in jails there would still be jails, just their conditions would be deplorable. Society always has, and always will remove their "undesirables", no matter how that is defined, from the rest of society.
