All right, just thought I'd start off with a subject sure to draw fire on my ass! But please hear me out. I'm a newbie and just want to see what the logic is on this one.
Why are sources not posted?
If it is to protect the source from prosecution: could not one of our wonderful 3LTR boys (DEA, FBI, NSA, CIA, UPS, ha) pretend to be one of us and eventually weasel his way into the system? If not, that is assuming that they are less smart than anyone else using the boards (never underestimate your oppenents). However, surely the sources already have enough confidence in their own abilities to be in business in the first place, so why would we need to hide them?
If it is to protect the post-er: that assumes someone is watching the board who would bust you if you mention a source. This then questions the entire safety of the discussion board community as a whole. Think of it this way. Thinking like the enemy, if I were a 3LTR man and I knew I could bust anyone who actually posted a source, then that means I have the ability to track down the post-er in the first place. Since I can do that, and since I'm not really tied down by any REAL laws such as the legal process, I could just watch the boards long enough to get a feel for who really had stuff, then locate the individual and execute a search. If the 3LTR man can't find our locations, then it's reasonable to assume we're safe enough to actually posts sources.
If it is to protect our source from being overwhelmed with business: I totally understand that. No one wants less attention from their source.
This is too long already, so I'll stop here. I'm not trying to be an ass - in fact, I can't tell you all how much this board has meant to me, to be able to know I'm not insane in this quest.
