Why not drink protein during workouts?

Dirty Workout

New member
Couldnt help but think that since protein is slow to digest it would make sense to drink during workout so when you done lifting protein is already starting to get into your system???

protein is hard to digest and takes a while to breakdown. If have have a bunch of protein sitting in your stomach, your body will be focused on digestion rather than focusing on getting blood into the muscles.

i think i read an article in Flex or something where some BB actually does that.....he drinks a light mixture of carbs and protein throughout the workout.....taking a few sips every couple of minutes or so. Actually I'm suprised it hasn't been brought up here before.

Also.....

Protein is used to maintain, build, etc. muscle after workouts so it wouldn't make sense to use as a fuel if we are looking at it from an energy perspective since it is burned a lot slower than carbohydrates!!! Studies show there is a 4 hr window for awesome protein synthesis after an exericse bout so this is where a rich carb/protein shake is used to the best of it's ability. Did you ever notice how you are never real hungary after exercise? Some studies show exercise may suppress the appetites of some individuals. For those who cut carbs. extremely low or totally for an extensive period of time I.M.O are crazy!!! #1 The only food your brain can use for whatever needs to be done like thinking, etc. has to rely on carbs to function properly. Now you wonder why we have so many wakos running around...DUH!!! #2 Wonder why you don't have enough energy to complete a hard exercise bout? Just a few things to keep in mind and think about!!! ~JT~ ;)

would you eat a steak while working out?? While exercising your body is in fight or flight, so little to no energy is spent by the body digesting, which is otherwise the main energy spent by the body during rest. So in short, if you were to consume protein while working out it would sit in your stomach like a ton of bricks.

It was Milos, who by the way, is an excellent nutritionist.

your body is using all the blood for muscle contraction and increasing musclular leverage to preveent injuries. To digest protein would divert some energy. Also shakes that contain protein are usually no long branched so they get absorbed pretty quickly. I would suggest to eat a high glycemic shake with protein after to induce insulin level for optimal nutrient shuttling

The bloat would kill me while trying to lift...just too uncomfortable. Have a shake an hour before workout, a carb drink immediately before, and another shake including carbs right after.

What I was thinking was sipping on an Isopure/water mixture slowly during workout. Nothing too heavy

By the time I do 30-45 min walking on treadmill, 20 min drive home its over 1 hr since I last lifted a weight

no reason not to drink your PW drink while on the treadmill after your workout. in the past i experimented with protein and carbs, protein, bcaa mixtures, etc, and never noticed anything substancial as far as putting on muscle mass. It is noteworthy though that my training left some thing to be desired at those times so maybe one day I'll give it another go.
