Why is California so screwed up?

Cali has always been the state where "anything goes" type attitudes reign supreme. In the old days if you lived in another state and you werent happy you packed up and went out west to make a better life since Cali has little social restrictions due to the heavy liberal leaning of that state. Of course, taken to its logical conclusion this "anything goes" attitude permeated the state government also, leading to the election of wackos to public office and the legislation that follows.

illegal immigration. What happens in CA is always a forshadow for the rest of the nation. Wait until Iowa, Kansas and the other heartland states state begin to swirl around the toilet bowl of rampant illegal immigration and excessive multi-culturalism.

thats what happend. if it was due to illegals, then states such as tx would have similar problems. not really hard to to comprehend is it?

It started with Proposition 13 back in the late '70's early 80's (?)
which locked in senior citizens home tax rates stable
regardless of what inflation did to the home value.
That caused many seniors to become prisoners in their current home,
cause if they sold, they would loose their Prop 13 tax rate,
and have to pay market value.
So now you've got a whole lot of widows living in 5 bedroom houses
they would have sold long ago if Prop 13 hadn't passed.
That has screwed up housing availability.

Then Ronald Regan slashed services for health care in the '80s
and suddenly there were wholesale dumping of indigent crazy people
out of the mental hospitals to live in the gutters and beg for lunch.

When Regan became president and spent way more than he taxed
a whole new level of inflation drove up prices,
and combined with all the people wanting to move to the "Sunshine state",
drove housing prives thru the roof.
The house I was renting TRIPPLED in sales price in less than 7 years.
This really agravated the problem described before with Prop 13.

In spite of all its problems though, it's still a great place to live,
and I'm thinking of moving back.

PA has already begun this trend, I'm thinking of learning Spanish so I can talk to my co-workers...
