Think about it, does any family really need an assult rifle to protect themselves?

I'm pretty sure that if someone is breaking in to your house / attacking you that a couple shots with a 9mm will stop them just fine.

The .40 cal was specifically developed for law enforcement because of the lack of stopping power of the 9mm.

9mm is over rated. Good load for a female however.

Right. The 9mm is not bad ifyou are very very specific with which loads you pick. I like cor-bon 115 gr jhp+p, but still it doesn't compete with the better loads for the .40 S&W.

An AR-15 with short barrel, Surefire and soft point ammo is way more effective than a 9mm. 9mm is good but far from being the best option. And btw, who are you to know what citizens need to protect themselves ?

Yep. An m-4 carbine (basically a shorter ar-15) with 40 gr polymer tiped rounds is the ultimate in home defense.

Since I live an in apt and over penetraition is an issue, I use a mossberg 500a, with an 18" barrel, a pistol grip stock and slide, and keep it loaded with 6 12 g 3" mags with #4 shot with a max dram eq.

they did not repeal that law, because it would take a constitutional amendment - we're safe, so far.

the .40 cal was not specifically developed for law enforcement. it was a compromise between the .45 and the 9mm. the .45's you buy are actually underloaded, because the .45 is nearly 100 years old, and ammunition manufacturers do not want people blowing themselves up when they try to shoot fully loaded .45 out of an 80 year old, brittle gun that doesnt have the tolerances new weapons do.

if you want 'full power' .45 ammo, you have to buy +p. the standard 45 ammo is pretty much equivalent to the .40, since the .40 is only ~10 years old and ammo manufacturers do not have to worry about people shooting them out of 90 year old guns.

.40 is actually the 10mm FBI light load. First came the 10mm and the FBI issued the S&W 1076 but their agents were for the most part, a bunch of pussies/geek/poor shooters so they had to create a pussy load. Then some folks at S&W realized that the the same load could be shot out of a smaller case. And that's how the .40 was born.
