why is american education so crappy?

It sucks because all the white people put their kids into private schools rather improving public schools.

(this one should get MTSW going, lol)

Regardless of where rich parents send their kids, they still pay taxes that go to public schools. And because of their "rich" status, they contribute more than poor parents.

Ghee, let's see here: Public Schools sucks, Universities Rule.

What's that rule again? "You get what you pay for"?

Start making parents PAY for that education, and you'll bet your ass, they'll be making sure their junior gets the BEST out of the eucation they're paying for out of their pockets every month.

When you get to university -- you're paying $10 grand a year. Only a total completel loser would pay that much, only to fuck up and join gangs and go drugs.

It sucks for the same reason most things suck - nobody takes responsiblity. Not teachers, not parents, not students, not administrators, not government, nobody. It is always someone else's fault. Nobody looks to themselves to try to make things better, they want someone else to do it or be responsible for it.

The US, as far as spending goes, is first in military funding and LAST out of all industrialized nations in terms of what it spends on education! That's just plain ridiculous if you asked me.

This sort of ignorance never ceases to amaze me. As if the money for education should grow on trees.

I understand why I have to pay for national defense. I get that. I am not always happy when American forces are deployed in wars I disagree with, but I have worn the uniform and I understand the correlation between American foreign interests and the military.

What I cannot understand is why I should have to pay for the education of other people's children, or even why I am required to participate (as a taxpayer) in a system I do not use.

And as far as kids in urban/poor schools...how are you supposed to focus on math when you are sitting in class in the middle of winter wearing only a ratty t-shirt, haven't eaten breakfast...you know you have your free lunch coming up, but you have no clue if you'll get dinner that night? And you can't do your homework because you have to go home and babysit your 4 younger siblings and cousins while your mom is at work and your dad is out drinking (and then you have to deal with wondering if he's going to come home and beat you, one of your siblings, or your mom). Such was the life of many of my 8th graders when I worked in a city school last year.

Welcome to reality for most of the world. Is it other people's responsibility to fix it?

this is the classic outcome of a government-provided model.

You'd think the failure of the USSR would drive this point home.

When I shop for a car, I want the best car I can afford. Automakers are scrambling like sons of bitches to out do each other.

If people could shop around for schools, you better believe parents would be taking responsibility for their "purchase".

A socialized model *by definition* undermines personal responsibility.

i asked about american education not american attitudes

No, you did exactly that. In America you can find some of the very best education in the world.

Now if you want to discuss who does and who doesnt have/make the opportunity to utilize the available education in the United States, Im listening.

The public schools are EXCELLENT in this area. I've had several neighbors in this apt complex that sold homes elsewhere, moved into an apt here (since homes cost 7 figures) so their kids could attend the local high school, then moved out the month Junior graduated.

I went to a decent high school in new jersey....i think a contributing factor is that there is not the same competition for university here and in Europe.....in europe most people can not afford private univiersities and rely on placing into the public ones which are ridiculously hard to get into......in America you have far more oppotunity, you can fuck up all you want and always find a university that will take you. I was born in South Africa, my uncle attended the Vitts and over there you were gauranteed to see stuff on your exams you had never seen before, he brought his exams with him to the US when he came here to finish up with university, and his professors couldnt even do the exams he brought over.......but if you ask my uncle, such difficult exams/systems is not effective because it causes more people to fail rather than preparing them

My neice is pre-calc at 8th grade. Or are you refering to some ghetto-fab high school in Compton?

I find it hard to believe that a nation ranked 14th in education (the US), is worse than a nation ranked 76th (Columbia).

I think one reason why we are 14th is that we educate all kids, where as in other countries, only the selected get schooled...
