why does my computer lag

what all can cause lag? mine keeps fucking lagging, esp when i try to open a new window or change HTTP identity.

i assume it isn't hardware (1200 athlon, 256 DDR, 20 GB HD with 9GB free). the modem is cable and usually runs at a good speed. so what all could be doing this. is there a diagnostic program i can download & run?

well if you are running 98 its probably the operating system, if you have XP check to see if anything is hogging the memory or if you have alot of free memory, and close any applications in the taskbar which are not needed :)

Windows 98 SE

but heres the thing. i sometimes use my computer to transfer 200 KB video files onto VHS tape using TV out. sometimes doint 7 a day.

point is, i just restarted my computer an hour ago (not start-shutdown-restart, but start-shutdown-shutdown-manually restart) and the lag is gone. i can have 4 windows open at once & counterstrike doesn't lag anymore. So was i somehow using up 90% of my RAM on MPEG files or what? that is my theory, as completely shutting it down took care of the lag.

yes, completely shutting down your system totally wipes out whatever was in RAM. a simple reboot sometimes doesnt' do the trick, because a reboot does not fullly shut down the system. A great way to check out what is going on is to check your system resources AFTER doing you MPEG stuff. I bet the CPU monitor will be low, but your RAM usage will still be high, even with no applications running. 98 isn't good of freeing up memory after being used, aka memory leak. So full shutdowns will be necessary.

You should really be using XP with that setup. It is a hell of a lot more stable and has less problems with memory leaks compared to their other OS's.
