It is the excess vitamins that your body was unable to absorb. You will get alot of necessary vitamins in the food you eat. Your body will only use the vitamins that you are low on the rest will be excreted from the body. Thats why when you take a multi there is such a high concentration of vitamins at one shot your body will grab what it needs and discard the rest. Hope this helps
