Why does it take 25,000 people to run the Pentagon?

In FDRS time it took 4,000 people to manage an Armed force of 13,000.000. Today we have an activy duty force of 500K and 500K reserves and it takes 21,000 more people to run the pentagon now?

Yeah, but in WWII, most of command was done overseas, not back home. The sophisticatuion of communication wasn't the same. It seems like a lot but it really isnt. Whats amazing to me is the magnitude of the logistics involved in deploying and maintaining that large a force. Just feeding them alone is incredible, never mind all the rest.

I also imagine that our military is far more advanced than it was pre WWII with respect to plannign etc. I doubt there is a possible scenario we can ever face that hasnt already been conceived and prepared for in some way, shape or fashion.
