Why does ALA make me so tired?

kbrkbr

New member
This stuff is killing me. The day after I take it, I am so tired I can barely stay awake. I initially thought it was making me hypoglycemic, but I started pounding carbs and was STILL fatigued. Does it effect anyone else this way, or am I some kind of freak? (don't answer that) Thanks very much. BTW, I am not currently on a cycle.

Again, I am fairly certain it's not hypoglycemia. I've been on ketogenic diets before and know what it feels like to be in ketosis. I don't experience any of the light-headedness, just feel like I've been awake for a week. Anybody help me out here?

Dump the ALA and try CLA or Flax seed oil. Flax seed oil has your omega 3, 9, and 6 fatty acids.

ALA can't cause hypoglicemia, the same way acarbose, metformin or glitazones, used as monotherapy, can't. Only drugs that enhances insulin production ( meglitinides, sulphonyluhreas( sp?)) or insulin itself can do that.
Whether its a side effect other than hypog., or its something else not related with ALA.
Just my 2cents...

I felt like a different person today. Just tired and weak. I don't know if I'm eating enough carbs tho. I don't really have much an appetite either?

Ok. I think it is hypoglycemia. Here is how you test it.

Get a blood test monitor.

Here is why I think ketogenic diets arent a good way to judge its not "hypoglycemic" with ALA. This is where you are probably mistaken.

Lack of glucose in your body and high protein diets crank up the TCA cycle (im a biochem major). This is tricarboxylic acid. This is a pathway to convert fat into energy. At some point in ketosis, your body begins a process called gluconeogenesis. Its essentially the deamination of amino acids (protein) to make energy (glucose). Ever wonder why taking a protein shake while on a keto diet gives you some energy ... this is why.

While on a keto diet, your body has revved up the TCA cycle and is undergoing gluconeogensis ... so you won't feel as "lethargic" because your body has actually compensated to make glucose! It has had time to adapt!

WHen you first start taking ALA, it CAN cause hypoglycemia bc your body hasnt had time to adapt and will increase insulin sensitivity in some cases ... sometimes TOO MUCH.

Do this: when using ALA CARB LOAD for the first few days. Twitched told me to do it while on dbol (I started 1.5 g ALA ED too) and it worked! I GUARANTEE it will help. PM me for more help. Good luck!

I wonder what clen would do to your ALA cycle. I know when I did a DNP cycle, my biggest complaint (side affect) was fatique.

I hope it don't make me feel tired ,I'm so tired everyday for what ever reason now, and I just got 6 bottles of 300 mg ALA in and haven't taken any yet was going to wait closer to my next one.

But some ketosticks.

300 grams of carbs per day and ketosis is stillpossible.

I'm with Corn on both points! Also, I think you will benefit from
at least 3 grams a day. I am doing 3 to 4 and sometimes feel
the way you guys are describing. Just suck it up and grab a
big cup a joe!

I have the exact same problem.

My appetite is the worse. I can't eat worth shit anymore for some reason.

Ok. I am going to disagree with a moderator with much more experience and karma than me ::cringe::

Corn, ketostix won't work here. They test for acetoacetic acid which is a byproduct of the TCA cycle. If your body hasnt started gluconeogenesis (Takes at least 24 hrs) then it won't work. If ALA induces a state of hypoglycemia then ketostix just won't work at all to tell. They will come up negative and leave you with the incorrect conclusion "well, it isn't hypoglycemia" -- WELL DUH! THATS NOT WHAT THEY ARE TESTING!!!

With all due respect :) I appreciate your posts corn ... i do .. but i disagree with your advice.

This is very interesting. Do you think that ALA can cause a false positive on a ketostick?

Ok dude.

You obviously haven't tried the ketosticks have you??

ALA will rapidy induce the stae of ketosis as well as increase glycolytic storage by 40%. I used the sticks on 300 grams of carbs a day and showed trace twice during the day.

Explain please?

I am looking for an explanation on this also! I have been using
keto sticks 2 and 3 times a day and STILL manage to almost
CONSTANTLY stay in either Trace or Small taking in at LEAST 200
to 300 grams of carbs each and every day! I am using 3 to 4 grams of ALA a day to achieve this. In the 3 weeks taking ALA
at this amount, the scale has NOT changed!....BUT?..What I
have noticed is (besides a slight increase in strength) that
has really got me excited is I am leaning out to the MAX and as
a result, starting to look MUCH bigger!! I haven't even started
anything (ya know, da real good suplements) and people are
telling me how "big" my arms are looking and how "lean" I am
starting to look. I can only imagine how this shit (ALA) works
while on!! Yep, this is going to be MY summer!!!!

That's awesome dude... what kind of diet are you following?

Glad to know it wasn't just me either.

300mg ALA + carbs and I have to about take a nap!

I used my wife's glucometer to see if it was hypoglycemia (which I had guessed too) but surprisingly my blood sugar was perfectly normal. Still didn't stop me from feeling like I was going to pass out...

Feeling keto and reading keto from the sticks are two different things.

I have been taking 1.5 to 2 grams a day and I have been yawning all day. Of course, I am taking tren, Winny and Eq too so the tren (I have been told) can make you very tired. I have been sleeping like a baby at night and at work I can barely focus on what I have to do. The great thing is that I have gained 10 pounds and I am leaner than I was 10 pounds lighter.

Oh well, I guess I would not be a good case study for the ALA tiredness experiment due to all the other substances I am injecting into my body.

ALA tires me out also and zaps my appetite. I FORCE myself to eat after taking it to try and counter the tired feeling. I am taking 600mg ed but am going to double that from what Ive read.

I have found if I consume alot of carbs within the hour that I take ALA I can balance the "crash" I felt before. I have only been taking it about 2 weeks but am curious to see what happens.

My main reason for starting is as a liver protectant.
