Who knows what life holds for me as I get older OR what it will hold for a smoker.
I think that you can look at the statistics and compare and contrast them between people who have lifted weights all of their life and those who have smoked all of their life. I'd imagine that those who have lifted heavily have MUCH fewer side-effects (at least life threatening ones) than those who smoked.
It is almost certain that I'll be in a wheelchair from all the weights that I lift? You must be joking!!! I'll be quick to point out that there are more than a few competitive strongmen who are in their 50's who are BETTER than I am now at 26.
Do you think that I will develop arthritis from lifting? You know, my mother was diagnosed with arthritis in her hands, hips, knees, elbows, back (etc...) this past week...and she hasn't lifted any weights in about 10 years...and she only did that for about a year. My father has it too...and has never lifted weights...but he DID smoke for 20 years. He also is a diabetic, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor circulation, morbidly obese, and the list goes on...
Is what I do now worth what I'll have in the future? Who knows...we both certainly do not. I often wondered how much healthier I'd been had I not went to college and spent so many nights not sleeping with my head buried into a book JUST so that I'd do a little better on an exam the next morning. I know that it wasn't healthy... In fact...I used to always get upset when some skinny guy in my class (who would always make the highest grades) would make some comment about how bad lifting weights was for my health..lol. Like studying all the time is healthy or something.
Flat out...I can't explain why I train. It isn't for health, it isn't for the body, it ain't for the money or the chicks either. It is for me. If you don't understand...I can't explain it to you.
