Why do so many people have a fear of clowns?

Whats the big deal. I was just trying to help. Looked like they needed some cooling off. I was just offering my help.

Just last night this girl told me about some homeless guy from her town that lived in the woods in a garbage shack (not exactly homeless??) He dressed in a ragged clown costume every day of his life and would wander around town creeping people out and begging. I think seeing that as a kid would have made me terrified of clowns.
