Some of it isn't the theater, but the movie. Remember Armaggedon and it's astronomical volume? That one went over the top.
The general high volume is due to customer demand. It's how the system works. Enough people want it or don't want it and they'll get their way. Tell the theater manager every time you go if you don't like the volume. Also, send an email to the theater chain's website.
ummmmm, out of curiosity why do you hear gunfire all the time? are you in a high crime area or are you in the military or what. I always thought you were a doctor or a nurse, you seem to know alot about medicine.
As far as theaters, i never watch them really, i go 1 or 2 times a year. With the advent of the internet, you can download most movies. I downloaded Jason X a month after it came out, and man, that was the best 800 MB of bandwidth that could possibly have filtered over the internet.

never had a problem
i do have this problem with clubs and bars. gunfire has screwed my ears enough without super loud music putting the final nails in
I think that is what the problem is! Just got back from Spiderman.....dang it was loud and the floor was sticky...I thought it was part of the movie effects!

i used to shoot rifles for my school (i was captain <sighs remembering days of glory>)and used to be in charge of cadets
the being in charge of cadets is where the damage to my ears took place as they would chuck shit near us (like explosives) or fire blanks during an exercise and we wouldnt have ear defenders in/on at the time. hence screwed up ears complete waste of time but i got to play with cool rifles and stuff
The louder it is, the better. Why? Because some people like to bring the annoying habit of talking during a movie from home. Or bring babies that cry, the high volume sound tends to drown them out easier.
Dont know about here but in Holland the sound of the film must be loud to cover over all the damn talking that my other countymen do. Blahahahahaha. I want to say "i payed to watch this film, not hear about the big pimple you found on your ass".
