Why do ampules exist?

Does anyone know the reason for ampules?
I don't see the logic in them and they're hard to open
There has to be a reasonable explanation.

Let me guess...you just broke a few ampules and are really really pissed.

Whats wrong with amps... I personally like them. I don't have to waste a pin and I know there is exactly 1 ml in them.

With vials you sometimes overdraw by 1 or 2 tenths of a ml and it eventually adds up. Next thing you know you are short a ml or two.

I agree that they are kind of a bitch, but, they work and the quantity is always consistant. If you are having problems opening them, try using a pen cap. Put it over the small end and pry it to break it off. works well for me.

If is still does not work, use a file and score it a little around the neck then break. No probs.

I'll take an uneducated stab at this.

I believe it is for sanitary purposes. Although I have no info to back this up I have noticed that at doctors offices they have amp as well, so I believe its probably better to have an exact dosage contained in a glass tube then draw out of a 10ml vial. Maybe someone will know the answer.

Ampules aren't my favorite, that's for shure.
But I'm not really complaining. I'm pondering.
Exact dosages seems like a viable answer. To be honest, the deviation from accurate doses is miniscule between bottles and amps. Assuming the person knows how to extract accurate amounts of liquid from bottles.
Could it be more of a marketing ploy? Product diversity from drug manufacturers?
Its like these 10 fl oz. softdrink containers being sold. I personally don't think I would be satisfied with just 10oz.

It is made only for sanitary porposes. Everytime you use a multi dose vial you greatly increase the chance of contaminating the rest of the unused product, so with individually dosed ampoules you eliminate the problem.

hey, thats true what you said about the decas, but even these are only 2ml vials, and I dont think anyone opens a 2ml deca vial and doesnt use it all at once considering its 200mg/2ml.....

Generally, you are not gonna find any multi-dosed vials in europe.....

Taking a stab at this but for sanitary p[urposes and in the medical world they probably use amps for more accurate dossages and for billing purposes. Plus when you get a script say for example test C u are supposed to use 1 cc every other week and 1 a month thereafter so why would a pharmacy give you a 10cc vial

Actualy, amps are an older packaging technology that is still being used in other areas of the world. Ampules tend to be more fragile and LESS sanitary. When an amp is broken, particles of contaminated glass enter the medication. This is completely unavoidable. Any injectable medication in N. America MUST come in a multidose vial.

simple and easy. Take a small file. score the neck of the amp once or twice and then break away from the side with the score on it. takes 15 seconds, works every time.
