Who'se got a Mac?

I'm buying one of those Mac Mini's when I have the money.. Has anyone used Virtual PC for the mac yet? I have a few windows apps that I need to still run, like Microsoft Map Point and some dinky games (old ones, not even as complex as Doom 1).. Just wonder how slow it is? I'd like to get rid of all the PC's in my house but I won't if Virtual PC runs too slow. I'll be getting the Mac Mini w/ 512MB ram if it makes a difference.

i have a PowerBook at home that I use for work & EF... I like it... I can give you a good bit of pro's on why to buy one...

alot of people see them as "glamour pets"

you know, like pot belly pigs.
 
not sure about the mini..

I have been looking into it.. It might be cheap but the specs aren;t as good as others. It's also a g4, not a g5. It has a build in video and sound card...

For work i am leaning towards a g5. mor emeory.. larger hard drive etc..

I've got a friend who has a G4 powerbook with close to the same specs as the mini and his runs great. If I'm going to spend $1,000 or more on a mac, it's going to be for a laptop, not a desktop. It doesn't make any sense to me to spend $1,000 or more on a Mac desktop when you can get a PC desktop for $399.. I guess that's why they put out the mini.. works for me, 512mb with superdrive (dvd burner) pushed the price to a little over $600 and then with the educational discount it's almost $600 exactly.
 
I guess it depends what your trying to do.. part of my job is design.. so a mini is no good :)

ah.. yeah, home PC. If I need something for my job, I make my company pay for it.. It would definitely be a Dual G5 in that case :)
 
I would love to, but there is too little software available, and I have finally reached the conclusion that Steve Jobs is a marketing asshole.
The music I download from iTunes can only be played on Apple IPod.
The same attitude that made him price Apple out of the market. Always thinking about monoply on his products.
His will produce the computer, develop the software, and not let anyone else make a penny from his products. And in the process, lose possible billions in revenues.
 
didnt adobe take down off their site results of a test of video rendering between a dual processor mac, a dell 3.2 ghz, some alienware pc, and a unix system? i read it was pressure from apple because of how bad they got donkey stomped, it was several seconds difference.

i really cant attest to the validity of whether all the details are true. we use mac's in all our research labs at school. they make me wnat to kill myself. they are stylish though.

I've been using Virtual PC for ages on a 1.25GHz G4. I reckon, at a rough estimate, that it runs on this machine at about the equivalent of a 300MHz Pentium. I think the mini is a 1.42 G4 so should be a shade faster than my machine. I've run some old games even on my iBook which is a 700MHz G3 without any problems or loss of playing speed. The extra memory is well recommended; you'd not be happy with just 256 megs.
 
There is not much point in looking at processor clock speeds when trying to compare Macs and PCs. Windows is a HUGE resource hog. But I've been there and done that with a Mac. I enjoyed it. It was fun to use and it was what most in my profession used. There was a time with most multimedia work was done on Macs but you can do the same work on a PC for less money and with way way way more software available to you.

professionally the industry standard programs for video & multimedia almost always available for PC and MAC.

The difference between a MAC and a PC is that the PC is so complicated to get things to work... Printers, New add-ins etc... it becomes a problem unto itself... The MAC steps out of the way and it becomes an actual tool...

yeah but when you count in high spec PCs have it all kinda of evens out. Still I always see macs mostly. I think it's because the industry just got used to using them professionally first.

As a programmer I switched to a mac about a year ago and it's no fun when I have to go back. When you add in the virus aspect and the general insecurity of Windows and the overall cruddyness of Linux, for me the mac wins hands down except that Windows has more new games available.
 
when i try to use my friends PC i want to pull out my hair......
i just prefer using MAC OS....

I'm not totally sold on the mini....although it looks pretty cool, however i'm a lil com=ncerned about transportation....seems to be a main reason why you would want something along those lines
 
Macs are very cool.....Steve and his boys did a talk at a conference i was at a few weeks ago, and it blew me away. The new iLife stuff is amazing.

I think I may have to get one....

for neuro data acquisition we use chart 5.1 it runs great. (os X) that is one major plus. we've successfully streamed an analog video source in and run both video and data aquisition at 100k samples/sec. trying to get pictures to print, printing in general, and running any internet (streaming video) has been very slow.

what i was doing (if this was in any way a reference to me) was just regurgetating test results i saw of the cutting edge models of each system. anyone who thinks osx isnt more buggy than windows xp is a lunatic

not at all. Someone else mention clock speeds and based on that I was saying it looks likes Macs are seriously underpowered when compared to PCs but that's really not the case since it takes less power to make Osx to run smoothly. Really I should say OS9 sinces that's the last time I worked on a Mac.

not to mention the 64 bit processors and 8GB RAM setups. lol.
 
just got my G5 Mac....best amchine i ahve ever used....unbeleivable....i no nothing about the ins and outs of a computer but tought myself on the new G5 Mac.....love to screen the grafics, everything....
 
Tablet OS?

Are those really taking off? I only know of one person owning one and using it on a regular basis.

lol i know 2 besides me. it took a leap of faith but im astounded at how muc easier class and work are on one of those
