Who's doing HIIT

I am thinking of adding HIIT in the mornings, either eliptical or threadmill. Just wanted to see what people are doing for HIIT and just get any advise that you guys might want to give. Also, I understand that you should have some protein prior to HIIT as opposed to empty stomach morning cardio. What are the general guidelines for this meal?
 
I stopped this awhile ago just because I have to do them outside and the cold air was making me taste blood for days. Anyway...I run for mine, and if I have a trail to use, I use it! The easiest for me is on the road, not much to deal with when you go to sprint mode. Most of the treadmills I've used have a lag time for speeding up/slowing down that feels akward with HIIT. Eliptical sounds good though, easy on the knees. A bike would work equally was well IMO.
I don't do anything completely empty for fear of catabolism, so can't really answer the second question. Bump for info!

This is my first time trying it so I'm just doing the 8 week program outlined in this link, mostly eliptical.

I'm finding that more people do a normal cardio session, time wise, and not the 4 - 15 mins. reccommended in the outline. Maybe I'll step it up a few notches.

I know I'd get more benefits from it in the morning, but I just can't seem to wake up so I do it at night before my WO.
