who knows about mountain bikes?

hey, i am looking at buying a bike, because i am *DONE* driving my car.

i am trying to get the best bike for the best price...help a brother out.

I run a bike shop and have for 6+ years. Are you looking to strictly commute? If so I wouldn't go with a mountain bike. More of a commuter/performance hybrid.

How much are you looking to spend?

i'm looking to spend up to $800.

i live in a mountain town with a shitload of trails here (and everywhere else in this state). i want something to use to commute, but i also want to use it to go on trails with friends.

what do you think of Motobecane bikes?

Motobecane are pretty shitty bikes. That's why you find them so cheap on the net. Decent parts spec, but shitty frames.

If you wanna stay under $800 I'd look at an 08 Specialized Rockhopper disc.

A bit over $800, I'd check outh the Rockhopper Comp, or Cannondale F4

Man up and get a fixed gear.

p0ink, denver/boulder craigslist is phenomenal for mtb deals. For $500-$1000 you can get a decent used stumpjumper FSR. That's probably more bike than you want since it would be a commuter too, I have a cannondale f400 for trail riding and it's just ''meh''.

it's a violation of your agreement? wtf company is telling you how to run your business?

Its common bro, we have it in the fitness industry as well. The average retarded consumer doesn't understand how businesses work (no offense to average consumer, but they are retarded :) ) Here's just one issue we run into all the time. We have 'brick and mortar' stores as they are called. We do sales/service/install you name it. Lets say Jim wants a Precor treadmill. The treadmill Jim wants is $2,495.00 in the store. Jim got on-line and found it for $2,295.00 shipped from Texas. Jim wants to save money, I mean, who doesn't right? So Jim gets the Treadmill he wants, saves $200, he's excited because its a quality piece with a 10 year warranty on the parts and that orthopedic walking belt his wife wanted. Jim is happy!

So fast forward a year down the road, Jim is running on his treadmill on day, it stops working. Just stops, on its own, wont start back up. Jim is relieved because he knows what a great warranty his treadmill has. He calls Precor on the phone, first Precor apologizes to Jim for the problem he's experiencing, then they suggest he call the local dealer for repair. Jim calls the dealer a couple miles from his house. The dealer asks where the treadmill came from cause he's not in their system as a customer. Jim says he got it on-line from a dealer in Texas. The dealer tells Jim he'd have to call them in Texas since they were the dealer that sold the treadmill. Jim calls the dealer in Texas and explains his problem. The dealer in Texas explains to Jim that they have no way of fixing it, they are in Texas and Jim is in Idaho. Jim is frustrated, nobody will fix his treadmill, he's now stuck with a $2,495.00 hunk of metal. Jim is a retarded consumer.

Here's another problem with people. Most will go to a store somewhere, try something out to see if they like it, then go on-line and try to save $20. Ok, great.

Now, fast forward once again. You see this piece of equipment on a tv commercial, it appears perfect for you, or at least you think. But for $699.00 you'd better find out for sure. You run down to the store to see if they have it and try it out. The store isn't there anymore, out of business. Why? Well, because you and everyone else basically did nothing but use the store as a giant demo department to see if you like something before you run home and try to save a buck by buying it on-line. Brilliant!

And this is why smart companies will support brick & mortar stores. They know, especially with expensive pieces, people will want to try it before they buy.

A brick & mortar store cannot compete price wise with some retard selling shit out of his garage. The B&R store has a big commercial building rent check to write, employees, insurance for employees, etc to pay for each month. The dude selling shit on-line out of his garage doesn't.

That and then you have dealers in town cutting their prices just to try to stay competetive with online stores. Eventually running them into the ground.

We will warranty a product we carry if bought elsewhere for a processing fee. so picture this x everytime something goes wrong with the product you saved a few bikes on.

And don't even get me started about people coming in and getting a fit on a bike, test riding it, and after all of that they tell you " thanks man, I found a really sweet deal online and I wanted to make sure it was the right size and what I really wanted."

lol that would drive me insane! Luckily for our industry manufacturers will only allow one local dealer per area. Used stuff is pretty big here, we deal with it ourselves too. I love when someone finds a steal on say a $5,000 Vectra on craigslist for $500.00. Never mind my sales guy spent 2 hours explaining to this customer what makes this machine better than the rest. So he goes and buys it from craigslist, tears it down to a billion small peices to get it in his truck, then gets home and realizes he has no chance in hell of putting it back together correctly. He'll call us because we know these machines and proper cabling and want us to come out and build it. I tell him sure, for $500 lol.

He'll scream, "thats how much I paid for the machine itself!". I tell him he paid too much, cause at this point he's only got about $35 in scrap metal if he recycles it. So, you want us to come out and clean up your mess or not?
