bascally I think of it like this:
the bible was written by man, just like the quran. the bible was written 2,000 years ago to help people lead a "good life," and allowed people to explain a lot of things that (at the time) could not be explained any other way.
2,000 years later, we know about pre homo-sapien forms and the theory of evolution is backed by scientific fact. (thereby invalidating the garden of eden and god making man as he is today) i mean, look at humans 200 years ago and look at them now. the average height, weight, musculature, brain size has significantly changed in this time period...
we also know about how people use religion and prayer as "peace of mind." actually, repetiotion has been a proven form of "calming the mind an body." just like using rosary bead to pray the hail mary 20x, meditating for ten minuted will produce the exam same physiological and psychological effects: lowered hear rate and blood pressure, muscle tension, as well as increased internal locus of control, evaluation of stressfull situations, and calmness...
now that we know about heuristics, the mind and body, biological, psychological, medical, physical, astrological sciences, isnt it a time to REVISE religious values?
human beings make the mistake of pitting science against religion. if you ask me, religion is simply a THOUGHT made by the human mind to help achieve answers to the unanswerable life questions. science is the PRACTICE of the human mind. instead of pitting them against one another, why not incorporate science and religion into a new pliable beleif system?
another example: in the bible, the actual location of heaven (when measured by astrophysicists) would burn a human form from the heat of the sun when in the area. (the bble also claims to resurect the human form before ascencion into heaven)
so maybe now that we know something new, we could "scratch out" that portion of the bible because we know something to be otherwise true?
f nothing else, this would keep people open minded to new things. this itself would help erase bigotry, racism, classism, and a whole other host of cognitive ills religion has laid upon us. (just look at the middle east!!!)
