Anyone ever take Tae Kwan Do as a young child? ANyone have their young child in Tae Kwan Do currently? Is this a good activity for an active 5 year old? Any thoughts?

go for a more useful art imo might as well send him to dance classes, something like wrestling, jeet kune do or grappling

Well if the question is aimed at me. Then yes, I just got back from the gym. Today was a cardio day. Half hour run/walk intervals and half hour on stairmonster.

I took it as a kid.....then progressed into Kenpo.......but yes it is an excellent outlet for kids with too much energy......check out the school though....

I wanted my daughter to start, but with soccer she is too busy for a 5 year old.........maybe next year.

thank you for your reply. the school is TMA and it is affiliated with my gym. therefore i can sign him up for the low low price of $29 a month. for now, this is his only activity outside of school. soon he will be taking swim lessons on saturdays. i can't sign him up for soccer as the classes for 5 yr olds run at 2:30 and 3:30 pm and I am at work during that time.

My nephew is taking it, he started at 7. He loves it and it has elevated his soccer game to a new level.

tell me the benefits of a contact sport like wrestling at age 5. I would have to look up wrestling schools in the area. I haven't heard too much about this, so the options here would be limited.

and the reason i ask is that I am looking for something sctructured. he needs structure. he seems very high strung and i want him to be involved in something that will teach him discipline and respect..not that he isn't learning these things from his parents. but i would like for it to be reinforced.

I suppose it depends, for health and discipline tae kwon do is as good as any other, for teaching how to usefully defend yourself there are better options, It really depends on what it is for chowgirl.

My Daughter started at about 7 Years of age.
Usually that is the youngest many schools will take kids.

She went for over 3 years and got to 1st degree Black belt and was preparing
for 2nd degree when she just ran out of interest and free time..

Most schools will have regional tournaments where the child is stressed to or required to perform in front of judges both FORMS and Sparring.
Very good for self esteem IMO

self defense is not the main focus here. i want him involved in an activity where he can channel his abundant energies. and i also feel this is something that can benefit him for a lifetime.

you still haven't told me what chowgirl mean. so i fail to see the humor yet.

These are the exact reasons my sister got my nephew involved in Tae Kwon doe. If you have any questions, I will be glad to talk to her for you.

I watched his class a few times and these little kids are good.

Thanks BigDawg!! I'm taking him to the gym at 4:00 today to meet with the Master and to get him signed up. He will sit in on his first class today. I hope he likes it. I;m very excited to watch him.

Very very good reasons. I agree. My cousin is an instructor in Tae Kwan Do, one of his 3 kids was getting a little lazy and overweight. Not her fault, just happened. Then he enrolled them in the class and it changed their life! the youngest was 3 or so. and the oldest was 11, I think. They all got their black belts.

I highly recommend it for structure and discipline, AND exercise. It`s right in the gym and a great price, Go for it.

No...my daughter is in cheerleading.

"Strawberry Shortcake, cream on top...
We didn't do it, no we did not.
We didn't do it, because we're on top!"

Started when I was 8, got up to thrid degree Blackbelt before I stopped a few years ago.

It's great and taught me alot outside of just martial arts about discipline, etc. If a child sticks with it, it's great.

TKD is a contact spor also... There atre some nice Freestyle wrestling programs for kids and they are usualy FREE... This is how the schools start to develop the future state champs and NCAA winners, they start these structured free community programs to teach kids wrestling early on... They also have pewee wrestling tournaments where the kids are encouraged to do well and they only wrestle like 4 minutes.
I suggest you take a ride to your local high school and speak with the Wrestling coach there as ask him about Freestyle wrestling programs in your disctrict... if he says there are none than try the nearest school... these programs are great and usualy free, plus he'll develop good friendships and it might help to pay for his school one day.

Read this thread ans ome of the post made by Sofa George about his experience with TDK schools.
