Who here has failed on free weight squats?

I have done it the past two weeks in a row. This is by no means a bragging thread like I think I'm hardcore super-lifter guy, as it's a rather humbling experience if you've never been through it, and I have never intentionally driven myself to failure because that's just not an exercise you really want to do it on. I have been squatting for about two years now and had never had it happen up until two weeks ago, and now it's happened two weeks in a row.
I work out alone and squat in a power rack with the pins set to right below the point where I begin my ascent. I use that both for safety and to gauge how far down I need to be going. The first time it happened was two weeks ago on my second set of breathing squats. I had gotten 18 reps on my first set which was about what I was shooting for because I knew 20 was just not happening. So on the second set I was shooting for 15 and right after I go down for the 14th rep, at the bottom of the movement I hit the failure wall like a ton of bricks. I think I made it up an inch before I realize I was going no further. At that exact moment, my first reaction was to hold perfectly still and see who all was witnessing this brilliant event and which chicks were busy writing their names and phone numbers on their panties ready to hand to this smooth guy trapped under the bar with his ass sticking out, beet red face, olympic bar going nowhere but down, and countenance that read "why is this happening to me?" Fortunately no one was really paying attention so I just kind of leaned forward and laid the bar down on the pins in a good-morning type fashion and got out from under it. Since I'm mostly lower body and not much upper body, I had to unload most of the weight I had on there and then squat it back up to rack it(as opposed to pressing it up there, i was not ready to make a bigger ass out of myself by failing at that, too), then reload the bar and go at it again. Anyways it was a humbling thing and it happened again yesterday because I squatted heavier with lower reps than I have been doing for the past few months and I wasn't used to it. Joy. Anyone else done it to themselves?

It's happened to me, but considering that my legs look like that of a chicken and I work out at home, it wasnt that much of a deal....

I usually work to failure on squats. I crash the wieghts all the time...I was somewhat embarrassed the first time I crashed the weights as I thought that everyone was looking at me, but now I don't think anything of it.

So work til failure and watch your legs grow.

Been there done that.

Squats - quite similar to yours.

Dead lift - Had to drop the bar once

Incline Bench. - In my best The FLY voice "HELP ME!"...that was ill.

Leg Press - You got it bottom of the rack. Had to slide out of the seat once...Yeah hey..it's me the retard who can't press this weight back up. CLANG!!!!

Soooo don't feel like your the only member of the I did one too many reps club!

yeah incline bench is one i'm waiting for it to happen to me on. i usually avoid it for that very reason, unless there's someone i know well enough there to bug for three spots. leg press has to be humbling. deadlifts i have yet to fail on, but it probably wouldn't be that big of a spectacle because i'm usually strapped on the sets i would have to be concerned about failing on.

now failing on tricep kickbacks...that's just one exercise you get nothing but glory from going to failure on, right next to wrist curls. people just stand back and are like...wow you are king iron, buddy, let me get the fuck out of your way.

The Dead lift thing was fugly to the core. I had 7 plates on each side and I was on the way up, had it locked and then my left hand cramped up and Instead of risking any injury I dropped it. Made a pretty big caboom.

OH and then once about a year ago I was using one of those flat benches that has the pegs every 3 inches or so. I clipped the right side of the bar on one because I was kind of zoning out. Next thing I now four plates go cling...clang..thunk...boom. one way then four on the other side do the same thing. I was like...uh...uh...what!?

damn Wodin those are some powerlifting numbers

Yep, I used to plan on doing it when I was younger and not worried about getting hurt. The other day I was zoned out doing hack squats with four on each side and thought I had set the catches at the top of the last rep but had pushed them farther out instead. When I let it down- well, it just kept on going.

I enjoy failing on incline DB presses and then launching the dumbell as far across the room as I can get it to go, knocking over as many 15 year old wife-beatered kids as possible. I also enjoy stretching to failure.

20 rep squats, racked weight, sat down, slammed half gallon of water, got down on hands n knees, almost dog style, puked up the half gallon, looked in the mirror, pale white, sweatin bullets, drove home.

People were worried.

I've failed on the bench several times. No biggie...I can always get it to the lower bracket.

Some idiot pissed me off this week while squatting. He was bouncing around a couple inches from the squat bar while I was lifting. What a jack ass. Could have caused a big knee injury.

I use the Smith Machine for squats now...for this very reason. Working out alone does have it's drawbacks at times, but I have come to like the Smith more and more...

I do not go over 500 pounds on squats that much, but work my way back down slowly...then I do a burn set...

The other day I did 315lbs. for 23 reps....never made 24, got to the bottom and the knees went out from under me...there I lay for 15 minutes gagging, huffing, and puffing....praying I wouldn't puke because I couldn't walk.....Been a long time since I felt like that....I do love it so....!!!!

Even free squats stress my knees a lot. I can't do them more than once a week. Same with deads and the lower back. Then there is the elbow issue on the bench.

I think joints hold a lot of people back.

downside about squats.....keeop the back straight and it stresses the knees, keep the knees straight and it stresses the back. still, i get no pain with free squats in my knees, whereas i used to all the time with smith squats as my back was sooooo straight

never had a problem with elbows on the bench, but DEF. on P.dips....no pain but i can feel something,. and i can't do french press either, that one really dont agree with me

Never went to failure on squats. I just don't have the balls. :(

I go to failure on SL deads. I can do 8-10 in the low 300's with straps, but without I'm I can only get 4 or 5 with 275 before my forarms give out. I blame my father and his puny arms. Fucker.

How in the hell do you do squats with "knees straight?"

uhh....a better descition might be with the shins/knees at 90* to the floor, so you legs straight and your back comes a little foward to compensate balance wise:)

SSME, it sounds like you should invest in a personal trainer. They could help you with your lifting, and this way you will always have a spot.

lol That's a fine idea PK. I would definitely have no problem paying someone $50/hr to spot me. Maybe he could also kick me in the balls for no extra charge in the middle of my sets and trip me on the way to the water fountain and spit on me. Not only that, but I could also listen to him convince me to squat in the smith machine and that the stiff peni...er..legged deadlifts I'm doing are bad for my back and that I'm supposed to lift with my legs.

Take up Olympic lifting. You can have some spectacular failures. I saw a guy in the training room performing snatches when warming up. He dumped one, and instead of bailing out from underneath it, he proceeded to look around for the bar. He did not spend a great deal of time wondering where it was.

Better him than me. Ouch.

Welcome to the club.....LOL

Our free weights are upstairs (someone's bright idea) and I dropped my deadlifts and knock a light fixture out of the ceiling downstairs! LOL!!!!

This scrawny guy from the front desk came up and said "dude, take it easy...."

He knew it was me, because I'm the only one at my gym that squats or deadlifts.....

some fucking powerlifter at the gym today was maxing out and didnt have the common sense to ask someone for a spot and the stupid ass dropped 425 on his chest from full extension,i had to help the poor fucker struggle to get it back up,then the asshole doesnt thank me but bitches because i came to help,i smiled and got back to training

I've failed once using a weight I was easily capable of. I just lost my balance. Unfortunately it happened in front of a guy I was desperately trying to look cool in front of too.

I've only failed spotterless on squats once. Pretty much as ssme described but not as dramatic. Now I have a home power rack and I plan on failing again. No biggie.

WODIN/yudfayfay that's what you get for not using collars doofus.

I bomb out at least 1/3 of everytime I squat.

The worst was I was going for 455 and I hit it once, then the second time I go down and my form wigged out and I damn near fell out of the rack...the bar BARELY got caught on the lip. That shit would have killed me, my friend spotting me usually touches me in the mid back to let me know when to stop at a safe distance after unracking but he didn't pay attention that time.

I don't mind bombing out as no one there squats so I'm not embarassed, I just don't like having to unload all of the damn plates.
