Ok.... I have a choice of two tours.

Tour #1
4 day hike.
1 night overstay in the ruins.
Here you get to hike through towns and the rainforest.
You make passage through the Forest of Clouds (sometimes called Sky Valley of the Clouds)
Basically a photographers dream trip.

Tour #1
half day hike to ruins
1 night overstay in the ruins.
Helicopter tour from above.

Same amount of time in the ruins, just minus the long ass hike in between.

So.... how much would I miss by skipping the long hiking tour? Or since this is a once in a lifetime thing (as I would probably never go back), should I do the hike?

#1 by far. You're going to want to see this for a while, it's the most beautiful thing in the world. It's a city in the clouds.

Now on the hike, I don't have to carry anything as everything is set up and moved by the tour people. But is the four days of walking through villages really worth the time? I mean, machu picchu itself is going to overwhelm anything you do prior to it, so is it really worth the extra time?

#1 sounds awesome.

take me with you.

If you hike through the rainforest, I would do it. The rainforest is incredible. You'll see animals you never thought existed.
