i just got rolling again. been dabbling with one at the center and missed it so much, i went and bought an Oscar friday & a Pacu & Chocolate Pleco today. i'm gonna need a bigger tank.....

I worked in the fish department of a pet store and maintained over 100 tanks there. Had 4 of my own then, but had to get rid of them before I went off to school.

I did have a 180 salt tank, not a reef tank though. That is pretty cool. I couldn't bring it with me. I love salt water tanks. I just can't get into fresh water tanks.

Elitist. Far more than salt. Unless the salt tank had a bow front. The most stuck up picky customers we had bought koi.

i hope i can get away with feeding them flakes and pellets. i'm not into feeding live fish to fish. too many chances for a parasite. but they'll grow slower...

Just don't feed them the recommended amount of food on the food container. It's bullshit and just wants you to use their product more. The more you feed them, the more waste in the tank and the more you have to clean it. Every other day is plenty.

that's the biggest problem, keeping ammonia down. the wasted food is prolly the biggest danger. i spent almost 50 bucks on a fluval, hopefully it'll pay off.

$50 is cheap. Oscars produce so much waste, almost as much as a Goldfish. Get an Arrowana or some Pike's or Gar's. Something at least cool.

Oscars have personality. personality goes a long way with me. but i'll tell ya something, when i worked in a pet store way back, we had a group of asian fellas who would come in and buy out all of our betas, arrowanas, wolf fish, anything killer. and they would have weekly gambling parties, like cock fights.

I had a 200 gallon reef with 1200 watts of MH and two Icecap 660 VHO systems over it. The 200 cracked in a move so I sold off the gear and saved one 4 lamp VHO system for my new 75 gallon reef. I just ain't the same though. I miss my powder blue tang.

I just feel guilty that the saltwater hobby contributes to reef degredation, but at the same time ensures its survival when everything dies in the next 50 years.

Well lots of the corals are just propagated now in those large facilities, I hear. i hear they aren't taking from the wild that much anymore.

I had a 125 gallon tank . I had a nice schoal of Pirahnas ( 5 super reds/ 5 caribe ) . i miss my fishies.

Oh and I mostly fed the p's frozen shrimp so dont call me cruel.

thanks..i loved that tank..but I became tired of changing the damn water and maintaining the tank so I sold the whole set up including filters for 500 bucks! to some lucky schmuck on craigslist..i spent atleast a grand or more on the setup.


by the way: the pool filter sand I used as the substrate is awesome. so easy to clean. all the fish crap stays on the top. and its heavier than that crappy colored sand they sell at fish stores so it doesnt clog up the filters.

I'd call up the place where you got him and ask what they were feeding him. Are the pellets too big? They make a food for Oscars specifically.

i bet i've spent 30 bucks on food already. won't eat pellts, got smaller ones and he won't eat those. won't eat blood worms. or flakes. ate all of the guppies & ghost shrimp. but i'm not filling the tank with that many fish, it'll go toxic too quick.
